I tag my mp3s before importing to MC> I embed the cover art in the file tags. When I import the files to MC, sometimes the album thumbnail shows the cover art and sometimes it doesn't. I have tried "update library from files" but it doesn't work. I know the image in the tag is OK, because, I can get the art into the thumbnail by using image - copy to clipboard and then image - paste from clipboard. Surely there's a better way to automate this process?

Try this:
File > Library > Import Media
Click 'Advanced', check 'build missing thumbnails' and re-import your files.
Might take a while, but might work.

Thanks, but I've rebuilt the thumbnails using the checkbox option the last couple of times I imported media, and it hasn't done the trick. Any other ideas?

I've just done a build missing thumnails too (using build 11.013) and it isnt creating thumbnails for any of my photos at all.

What version are you using?

Thanks, Jim, I'm using v. 11.0.316

Manually erase all the thumbnails here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Thumbnails
Then will MC start building them correctly?

MC 11 has this bug. There have been many threads started on this subject - all involving thumbnails not appearing when cover art is stored INSIDE the tag.
Unfortunately this longstanding bug has never been fixed because J River think that it doesn't affect many people - however judging by the number of posts on it, it seems fairly common to me :-\

I store my music one folder per album (folder scheme is genre\artist-album). While I store the cover art inside the tags, I also keep a jpeg of the cover art inside the album folder. When MC is building thumbnails, does it look for art in the file location? Does it look for any particular name? Inquiring minds want to know.

Good question. I don't know where MC looks to build thumbnails.
Another odd thing is that if you store the cover art inside the tag, that thumbnails which MC displayed previously seem to randomly disappear. Why is that?

That's exactly what has happened to me. ?
