Recently I've had two CDs, each with one track that will not be ripped, and I get an error msg with something like "Hard Error, unable to read" and the track is completely skipped.
I've tried to change the rip mode from Secure to Normal and I've reduced the speed, all to no avail.
I've only tried MC to rip as it's all I have. Any ideas?

Do you see any visible damage on the disc? Try cleaning it.
Try a different CD drive if you have one. This suggestion has the most probability of working.
Try it several times in secure mode. It might get it one time even if it fails other times.
If that doesn't do it, rip it in analog copy mode. Be sure to use the auto volume setting to get a clean undistorted copy in analog mode; also, your CD drive has to be cabled to your sound card for this to work.
BTW, the "hard error" just means that the drive returned an "unrecoverable" hardware error during the rip process. Usually a damaged disk, or your CD drive might be borderline ready to quit on you. You could try cleaning the lens.
