Title: how do i import media to artist files?

when i import media some files go to specific folders for the artist in media library, but a lot of them are going to the 'unassigned' folder, which is a bit of a pain.  how do i make sure my files go automatically to the right artist folder.  is it something to do with the tags?  help please, thanks, nick. :P
