Title: Do you want Audioscrobbler Built-in?
Post by: danrien on January 02, 2006, 09:00:05 pm
So, the plug-in annoys the hell out of me, and I just think it's time that the community of MC users get together to ask J River to add this option in... enough of us use it!

[ Edit by JimH -- Since the Audioscrobbler plug-in can cause an MC crash, I'm locking this thread.  Please read about it before using it. ]

I'd like that.
If you're having trouble with the current plugin losing your login info, check my thread for how I fixed it.

I don't think it would be a big challenge for j.river to write a better plugin. It would bring positive attention for MC. It's a free and popular service.
So why not?

A plugin with a working cache and ipod-support would be heaven!

Last.fm is a glimpse of "the future" today, are you a part of the Web 2.0 revolution? http://web2.0validator.com/ ;)

I'd like this.

I'd also like last.fm to get a wee bit more reliable.

thanks zxsix, i did use the workaround before posting.  it was after that that I decided this issue should be brought to the forefront.

It would be great to have it integrated in MC

and some wishful thinking: wouldn't it be great if a plug-in could get the xml feed data off of last.fm and update your number plays for tracks in MC?

Not sure about this part.
I have a few UPNP devices that can't update playcounts on last.fm.
I'd rather have the clients updating MC and MC telling last.fm how many times songs have been played.

I also use audiopod to report songs that play on my ipod.

Yes, it would. We would know that it would get updated as new versions came & went.

But unless there's $$ in there i doubt they will bother. No doubt it's great for the user when it actually works ;)

How does JRiver benefit from such a plugin ?

For all we know lastfm is just waiting for the right moment to go the way CDDB did.

yeh sorry i lost some specificity.  i was talking about when you happen to lose your back ups and u happen to lose mc, or you install mc on a new machine.... this way you could keep track of everything, and it would all be stored on the internet in event of catastrophe.  of course you would want to be able to not download your last.fm info.

yeah: that'd be nice too if MC could get your data from last.fm, not to update your playcount, but to automatically build playlists based on your top artist/track charts.

it'd be nice too to have last.fm as an additional source in the Artist Info submenu in playing now.

You make JRiver look greedy and lazy ;)

JRiver needs one thing more than $$, and that is (happy/new) customers/users. They have to improve their products all the time to beat the competition. Supporting a popular service like this would be a pretty easy way to get positive attention from new users.

Last.fm is a taste of the future, sky is the limit for all the cool stuff you can do when you plug into their content.

If i was looking for a new mediaplayer today, i would not have installed the MC-demo. Just because of its poor support for last.fm. And thats a shame!

If we had a better plugin there would be no need for Audiopod, and all other players that can record last played/playcount would be included. And if the submisson-servers of last.fm were down, the plugin would save its cache until it could submit.

For all we know J.river is just waiting for the right moment to go the way CDDB did.  :)

Ideas:
to let Last.fm recomend music in MC, based on your taste , so you could preview and maybe buy/dl from whatever store MC supports.

Make the start-page dynamic and personal using last.fm feeds.

Load last.fm radio in MC

agreed! a smartlist/view scheme based off of last.fm data would be great!

I'm not at all sure that adding built-in support would attract users. Vuplayer, with built in last.fm support, gets no mention on last's site; they just seem to mention what plugins are available.

That said, I would appreciate built-in support. I'm sure quality would improve and it would be nice to have a developer responsible for last.fm support.

I wouldn't mind seeing a column that would display the number of times MC submitted a specific track to last.fm.

They did dedicate an article in the front page when Amarok (linux player) poped out with built-in AS support.

I'd like it. It would enable better integration, such as seeing the neighbors of a song in an small window, a la amazon (people who bought this also bought... )

i didn't really create this poll to see if it would attract new users (which it definitely would, most programs with built-in support do get listed), but rather to see if enough people could vote 'yes' to inspire the crew at J River to step up and take over the plug-in.

Yes. Definitely. Last.fm kicks ass.

If there was some way they could collaborate to make a sweet plugin which means you can basically view your profile in Media Center itself and your nuts from there, tightly integrated (I know this is possible because it already displays HTML pages).

Add my vote to having a "built-in" audioscrobbler plug-in. Particularly if it can take the playcounts from the iPod through MC into Audioscrobbler.

Lastfm, from what i understand keeps a record of what you listen to.

So now you can see what other ppl listen to and find audio neighbours.

The thing i don't get is does it keep a track of what u like ? Or does it guess this from how often you play something.

If it can't keep track of what i like, how useful are the suggestions the site makes ?

I'd think if you play this and that type of music, you probably like it.
Some of the suggestions it makes for me are good, things I'd not have tried. Lazy, and I am in China. Not much opportunity to listen to things on the radio.
