This problem seems to have been corrected in version 11.1.94
2006-01-06
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am trying to get MC11 to play a DVD. I keep getting an error saying
The DVD can not be accessed
Either your system is missing some components for playing DVD video,
or another application is currently using those components.
I have both Power DVD and Nero loaded and both play the DVD correctly.
and I can not find anything that appears to be using any of the components except MC11
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks, Anne

I'm having the same issues... nothing appears in my DVD decoder audio/video settings even though I have PowerDVD 6 installed. I had Nero and Media Center recognized it ~ but I hated the playback quality, so I installed the PowerDVD 6 trial instead.
Now nothing shows in the decoder settings. Reinstalled MC11 again, and still nothing. Reinstalled PowedDVD6, still nothing.
There were problems setting up for DVD-Video playback.
1 out of 3 DVD-Video streams failed to render properly....
Helllllllllllllllllllpppppppppp! :o

Is there a way within Media Center to be able to choose what audio/video decoders to use? I can't find it.
-
Sorry to nag on this. :-[
But I am trying to find out if there is a way to tell Media Center which DVD decoder to use for DVD playback. When I go to Playback Options/DVD Configuration, I see a few decoders available but MC insists on using the Nero codec for playback. Not sure if it's a Nero issue or an MC issue, but the video playback looks downright awful... so I am trying to switch to a different decoder (specifically PowerDVD) to see if that clears it up.

Does it work with Windows Media Player? If not, it probably won't with Media Center. I haven't tried the latest PowerDVD filters but a few versions back they didn't allow other apps to utilize them.
-
What DVD playback software do you have loaded?
-
Nero 6 and Power DVD.
The DVD plays in each one of them but not MC11.
When I look in MC11, it shows Nero as the DVD player, but I cant change anything, the movie does not play, and I get that message I referred to in my original message.

Does it work with Windows Media Player?
You could try renaming the Nero filters and see how MC reacts (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeVideo.ax, NeAudio.ax).

--- FIXED --
Latest version of MC 11.1.94 fixes the problem...

Still doesn't work for me. :P
I now have Nero 7 trial and PowerDVD trial installed and no luck. Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime and PowerDVD all play DVD's with no trouble. Using MC 11.01.95.
When I click on DVD Filters under DVD Playback properties, a message pops up with a blank field.

Clicking on either the Video Decoders or Audio decoders button gives me this:

And when I click on a movie to play back, I get this:

Sorry about the yucky colors... I compressed the images down so they'd download a bit easier.
Any ideas? I really like the idea of using Media Center as the hub for all my music, images and video, but the DVD playback part just ain't working right for me. I must be doing something wrong, though, because AnneFTL was able to get it to work.

Have you considered WinDVD?
I think you can download a trial of that which will
install the appropriate codecs. MC then uses
these to play DVD's.
Works here :)
Probably best if you remove PowerDVD first though...
-
Still nothing. So now I have PowerDVD, Nero and WinDVD installed. All apps including Windows Media Player play the DVD just fine. MC11 will not. >:( Even reinstalled MC11 for the fourth time.

Peculiar. Sorry about that. I'm out of ideas,
guess you'll have to wait for JRiver folks to
come up with something bright... :-\

I appreciate the help. It did work when I had Nero 6 installed but the playback was terrible. I also had PowerDVD loaded but couldn't select the PowerDVD decoder and that was frustrating enough. Now I can't get any of it to work.
Oh well. Thanks again for the attempts... I realize I just have some kind of weirdness going on here. :-\
