Title: Somewhat OT - Microsoft xPod?
Post by: glynor on January 26, 2006, 05:29:13 pm
Rumors shuffle about a potential Microsoft Portable Device (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060126-6058.html)

What do you think?  If Microsoft made a portable media device would you consider it?  What features would be important (losseless, video, games, format support)?

Not sure about the rumors, but Jobs think they should (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10853916/site/newsweek/")... Excerpt:
Quote
“The problem is, the PC model doesn’t work in the consumer electronics industry, where you’ve got all these companies and some do one thing and another does another thing. It just doesn’t work,” Jobs said. “What’s going to happen is that Microsoft is going to have to get into the hardware business of making MP3 players. This year. X-player, or whatever.”

Sounds good to me.  I've always liked MS Hardware.
Apple might make pretty looking stuff, but for actual use
I think MS have always been a slightly above the rest,
the exception being Sony... even then It's too close to call for me.

On the other hand, I've never really been in to the whole portable
business, I would break the darn things to quick.

I've got fairly high requirements from a portable device.

What I want is something that is:
* Powered by the sun/wind/kinetic energy
* Uses Thought control
* Is watch sized
* Can be dropped from any height or velocity without damage
* Has a pop up 24" Hologram Screen
* Works as a phone/Media Center/ Games Console/Life Organizer
* Tells the time (Primary function)
* Has batterys that last at least 5 years before needing replacing
* Costs less than $100
* Holds 10TB of data
* Connects Wirelessly to the internet, my car, my house, girlfriend, family, that attractive girl next door.
* Runs JRiver MC
* Has a Comprahensive manual, which is just 5 pages long.
* Oh and it must make coffee (Milk, two sugers).

That's what the lighter's for.  You've never seen the "bic trick"?
