Title: OT - FTP speed
Post by: NickM on January 30, 2006, 07:34:41 pm
It has been a while since I downloaded a new version and I see that the download speed from JRiver's FTP server is now painfully slow.  At version 11.0.316, the .exe took me less than 5 minutes to download.  I tried yesterday ( and the day before ) and gave up.   Now it's 1 hr in with 20% downloaded.  What's up?

Took me about 1 minute to download the latest
version tonight, so I'm guessing the problem isn't with
JRiver FTP server  ?

Something must have changed between whoever JRiver hosts with and international connectivity to Singapore.  Oh dear.

Sadly, this didn't help.... Singapore has a very fast but archaic backbone and the international connectivity is by provider as opposed to country gateway.  I have local backbone connection of 15Mb/s x 2; I can get WinXpSP2 in seconds, but MC11 in hours.  Never mind...

Hi Nick,

I don't think the problem is with our server. It could be that the XP service pack is cached, but Media Center isn't. Have you tried anything else big?

I installed this out of curiosity, anyway I'm afraid it annoyed me after about 1 day.
Now I've uninstalled it.
This has totally knocked out internet explorer, it just doesn't connect any more.
And Firefox will not download anything (I've tried deleting my profile, checking theres
no extensions installed.... but no go...)
I've also reinstalled FireFox.. but again no go...
Any help would be appreciated  :-\

Somepeople like FF, but it seemed to create more problems for me

I played with IE7 for a week it has Tabs like the other Browsers do, but some plug-ins don't work or work well with it (Like Googles Tool Bar) it crashes IE7 when you exit IE7.

Funny you should mention that .  I was installing IE 7 as you wrote it.
Sadly IE still won't connect.
I'm not a huge FF fan, but I have it for when IE is broken.
Didn't expect them to be both broken at  the same time however!
Currently running something known as the Windows File Protection...

Make sure your browser is in exclusions in the firewall.

Also check to make sure the proxy is set correctly or is disabled.

The other day Norton AV was blocking my port 20, and 21 for my FTP server and took me a hour to figure it out. I thought it would have been the firewall.

Sometimes when IE does not work, a reboot of the system helps.

Well intreguingly Windows File Protection restored me to IE 6.
Now when I try to navigate with IE it starts FF!

without uninstalling IE7.....

New copy of windows in the morning.
Almost made four months with this copy :-S

Unfortunately you picked the wrong time to download FreshDownload. There must be a bug in the latest version because I installed it on a new machine and it knocked out my IE too. Couldn't figure out why. When I saw your post, I uninstalled it and luckily my browsing came back. I contacted the authors about the problem. When they get it fixed, give them another chance. I have been using it for a long time and my MC downloads are in seconds.

More odditys but a breakthrough :-)

I tried last night to uninstall IE7, but because the Windows File Protection
had been already kicked it wouldn't uninstall.
This left the machine in a peculiar state because IE6 is now
the IE installed, however if i bring up the options box
it brings up the settings for IE7!
Anyway it still wasn't browsing.
I just had another crack at it, and found an entry which said
how to make IE7 believe it was installed again to allow uninstallation.
Soooo.... I did this and then successfully uninstalled IE7.
However....
I still have the configuration options for IE7?!
But all of a sudden IE has kicked back into life,
apart from being in a weird clear type font which looks
funny on this screen. :-D

Now got IE7 up and running and everything *appears*
to be back to normal :-D

IE7's a weird beast tho!
Be interested to see what other things they do with it in Vista.
Seems to render pages incredibly quickly, probably faster than anything
else i've used!

I like the pre-2 version.
But if you use it and the latest Google toolbar, the 'Open in new tab' is missing.
Guess that's why it is a beta.
