Title: New DSM-520 - Happy Camper
Post by: Motorhead on February 10, 2006, 01:14:41 pm
This is primarily informative for anyone looking at media hubs.  I did not see any information on the D-Link DSM 520 on this site (only the DSM 320).

I am not a big reader, but I reviewed a ton of material before purchasing my first media hub.  The new D-Link DSM-520 apeared to be the best thing for the price, so I ordered one ($220 from Dell).

Fearing tangles with my encrypted wirless network and using a non-standard media manager (MC, not D-Link), I avoided hooking it up after a few beers last night.  As it turns out, my dog could have probably done it if she had opposable thumbs; The D-Link DSM-520 could not have synced up easier with MC11.  Once the correct network settings were put in, D-Link quickly found MP11, and I was rockin' to some Colour Haze in no time.  The DSM-520 is located in the basement, and the Linksys wireless router is on the second floor of my home near the PC with MC.

Some initial testing showed excellent results for music playback, and fairly easy photo management.  I have experienced some issues with video, but I know there are limitations for the types it will play back.

Over all, I am thrilled to be able to access the 9,000 *.wav files on my 2nd floor PC from my entertainment system in the basement.  I am considering moving to FLAC in order to gain more hard disk space without losing sound quality.  Any experienced lossless-compression-with-streaming folks out there, please warn or encourage as you see fit.

Great! Thanks for the report, and glad it worked. The video stuff may be caused by bugs in the firmware, I did a google on DSM-520 UPnP and one of the first articles reported on bugs with video playback.

Thanks for the review.  I just added it to the list of supported devices.
