I have MC 11.1 installed on my job computer, where the space for profile data is limited since it is backed up automatically. MC 11.1 uses a lot of that profile space; a bit less since I deleted some back ups, but it is still a lot of data.
-Are there any install options that could limit profile data volumes?
-Are there files/directories I can safely remove if I only use MC for music?
-What impact do skins have on the amount of data ?
-Can I choose another location for profile data?
-Any other good ideas?
-
i think more data is wasted with a few mp3 than all the data files that mc11 has.

True indeed, but while I have about 30 GB available for e.g. music files on my hard disk, I have about 30 MB allowed profile space in the "Documents and Settings\user\Application data" area where MS puts the profile data. That's why I also ask if I can choose another location for the profile data.
-
Use the library manager to create a new library in your big space, and then clean up the default library.

Thank you John, you just lifted 7.5 MB or so off my shoulders! Wy didn't I figure that out myself?
I'm still intrested in anything that could help me get even more data out of that area, but this will help me me out of the problems I have right now.

If you're using Firefox or Thunderbird (and probably other programmes) you can move those profiles out as well. But any further discussion should probably be in another OT thread...?

Thank you alanl for the suggestion, but I was thinking more in terms of how MC application data (in the Documents and settings area) could be slimmer, e.g if the Thumbnail file cold also be located elsewhere - and if and how I could make it smaller.
The other programs on that PC I don't want to mess with since I want the support team at my work to recognise the settings in my computer if I need their help

I would also like to chip in and ask for a defniable thumbnails file path. I keep my default library on the same portable drive as my music and use two computers (both which access and write to the same library).
However, now, MC redraws the thumbnails and tile info seemingly from scratch each time I start it up when I arrive at work or home (albeit in secs. rather than the minutes that it takes to properly rebuild them).
I would love to have both copies of MC using the same thumbnails file too.

7.5 MB
Very insignificant
You can get more if you just purge the Internet Explorer temp files and delete the files in the recycle bin.
if you want you can install MC on the larger drive and then also point all folders to that drive also (like cover art and temp folder)
you can also use a new tool at microsoft
http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm
to safely delete temp files it can find for you.

KingSparta,
If you put a 40 ft boat in a lake, it will use almost no space compared to the total area of the lake's surface, and the effect on the water level isn't even measurable. If the lake is small, the boat will look ridicilous, but even then the area and deplacement of the boat are very small compared to the dimensions of the lake. The effects (apart from the aestethical ones) are insignificant.
If you put the same boat in a 50 ft swimmingpool, its effects are no longer insignificant.
What I am doing now with the help of John's advice is lifting the boat out of the swimmingpool and moving it to the lake.
My computer gave me messages that about 80% of the available "profile area" (of around 30MB) were used, and when it enumerated the files I saw the MC config files. The automatic backup of this profile area is somewhat of a rescue kit if the PC has to be re-installed, securing the contents of my desktop and a number of settings. This is feature I cannot affect, the only thing I can do is not to put files in that area that don't have to be there. So I'm moving the files to another area (on the same disk, but with no back-up). There the amount of data is just like two more tracks in the music collection, in addition to the 4000 or so that are already there. Indeed very insignificant :)
Thank you for the link. It could be useful for other reasons. And I appreaciate your helpfulness!

The thumbnail path can be changed with this Windows registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 11\Properties\Thumbnails - Base Path
I use this key value:
C:\mcl\tn\
"mcl" is my library database folder and "tn" is a subfolder for thumbnails.

I just checked my thumbnail folder size. It is currently about 50 MB. It would not fit into your entire profile space.

In the past I have had some success in Moving the Swimming Pool in to the Lake,
thus giving the boat more space, but I'd recommend Googling that one,
it's not for the faint hearted!

If you put a 40 ft boat
If I had a 40 foot boat to put in a "lake" or Even A "Swimming Pool" I would be called CEO.
In my world my "Rubber Ducky" is my substitute for a "40ft Boat" and my bathtub is my substitute for a "Swimming Pool" and my title is "Hey You" Or "Dude" i will answer to both.

I chose a 40 ft boat and a large swimmingpool since this is the only place I can afford them!
Tomorrow I'll go on exploring the non-metaphorical parts of the issue with the interesting input I've got from this thread.
