All of my song names have suddenly disappeared. I was adding album art to my database and now the song names are all gone. They play alright but, are not visible. MC 11.1.119. Windows XP 512 M Ram. What happened? What can I do?
-
what happened?
You're library has gotten corrupted.
what can I do?
restore a library backup or try the 'update library from tags' tool
this is cropping up fairly regularly but I've never seen an explanation as to why.
-
OK. I tried to "update library from tags" and that didn't work. So, I restored a backed-up library and lost 4 or five hours worth of work I had done updating tags and album art, but, at least it worked. But, then I imported some files. MC backed up my library as I have it set to do but, then it updated all my files (which took about a half hour) and after that all the song names were wrong. The name of the song became the entire file name. So, I had to restore the good library again. But, is this going to happen everytime I import files?
-
The name of the song became the entire file name.
Thats Because it could not get the ID3 Tag Out of the file and what happens is MC pulls in the file name as the "Name". This normaly happens when the media file has no tag or the file\tag is corrupted.
You Might Could use the MC Finger Print Option From YADB And If It ID's the file it will fill in the Tags.
-
That's an interesting idea King. I remember shadybimmer asking about something similar in the past as he had lost tag info and wanted YAdb to do this, i recall it was not possible at the time.
has this changed since ?
-
It is always possible, if the data has been submitted.
If not then you take your chances if it can be pulled up.
All of My Music (24,000+ files) have been submitted Because I took advantage of it.
what is unclear to me is why JRiver does not have MC setup when you rip a cd to allow the user to submit it back as finger print data.
-
Hmm..but point remains, does MC submit a fingerprint to YADB ?
I heard they use it internally on YADB, which might possibly mean that MC does indeed submit it. How else would they distinguish between multiple updates of what is in effect the same album.

You Can If You Use The Option To.

It Is Not The Same Option For Albums
Digital Fingerprint Is
Right Click On Track, Then Library Tools, Submit Track Info To YADB

I think I fixed this by just going back to a older library that was not corrupt. And, then I just redid the tagging and adding album art that was lost. As for YADB, that would not be an option for the whole DB. I find it only gets around 75% of the CD's I submit, to say nothing of downloaded/improperly labeld files. This would leave me with over 8000 or, so files to retag manually. I just back up my library manually more often lately. The problems I was having with crashes and tag loss did seem to be related to one file, strangely enough. whenever I tried to update this file (a .wma with DRM by btw) the library would crash/ become corrupted. Weird.

If you submit the files in the database then YADB will have the data, if you don't it may never will.

This happened to me too a while back.
I retrieved the tags from the filenames using Library Tools > Fill Properties From Filename...

Or restore a backup of your library.
-
my vanishing field is ''comment'' not album or song name.
