Title: EvilLyrics Plugin
Post by: Mr ChriZ on February 27, 2006, 06:38:51 pm
Quote
I'm going to drop support for EvilLyrics because I have a lot of problems with it recently.
It often comes back with Spam etc.

I'm looking for an alternative to develop a plugin for over the next couple of weeks.
Hopefully something I also don't need to recompile on a regular basis as well.

Something like this maybe?
http://autolyrix.sourceforge.net/

Any suggestions welcomed.

We shall see. If anyone wants to take on the EvilLyrics stuff,
they're welcome to the sourcecode.  It's written in C#
the codes fairly tatty as it was done in an evening with little care
other than to ge it working =)
I think Ideally it needs porting to C++ which I started doing once, and had
it more or less working, but then seemed to mislay in the midst of my dissertation.

Just post me a PM if you want the code.

EVIL LYRICS IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED BY THIS AUTHOR!

WARNING 07/06/2007
A new version of EvilLyrics has been produced,
which does not work with the old version of the plugin.
Please download the latest plugin:
http://uppit.com/d/Z02E4

What is EvilLyrics?
"Automatically searches for lyrics as your song is played in your player " - EvilLyrics Website (http://www.evillabs.sk/evillyrics/)
Note I'm nothing to do with the EvilLyrics team, I just wrote the plugin.

What does the plugin do?
The plugin allows MC to connect to EvilLyrics.

Screenshot
A screenshot can be seen here (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/4738/evillyrics4qh.png)

Where can I get it?
The plugin is available from the skins and plugins page
http://uppit.com/d/H6X1W

Pre-requesits
The plugin is written in C# V2.0
The plugin requires the latest .NET 2.0 (2.0.50727) Framework from Microsoft available here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&DisplayLang=en), without which it will not work!

It also requires Evil Lyrics (http://www.evillabs.sk/evillyrics/) (Oddly Enough!)

Plugin Features
* When tracks are played the information is sent to Evil Lyrics (A new instance will open if it's not yet open)
* Enabling and Disabling of the plugin
* Updating of library with lyrics providing they come from "trusted source" as deemed by Evillyrics.
* Limited Configuration of Library update

Enjoy!

Absolutely Beautiful!  The only thing I've noticed is that for some reason it is minimizing when I change tracks... Retested with winamp to be safe, winamp is not showing the same behaviour... is it my machine or can you recreate this?  -Thomas

Nothing you can do about it, but the EL leeching feaure sucks, when used with MC's preview playback.

Thank you very much for your plug-in Mr. Chriz. Just downloaded and installed and it looks great combined with Rhino's Playing Now.  :)

Just a couple of quick comments, if I may

- If a song already has lyrics, the update library option is enabled and evil-lyrics finds new lyrics for that song, are they overwritten or kept intact? Perhaps this could be an option?

- I'm seeing here the minimize when the song changes thing too.

Thanks again for your work.

Can you elaborate a little.  I'm not even sure I've used the preview playback you've
talked of.
Cheers
Chris

Mr. ChriZ,

Right click on the MC DSP studio and then select your preview mode.  EvilLyrics however stops looking for lyrics after 20 songs if you put in 5 second playback intervals.

I've been playing with Evil Lyrics recently and have found the amount of spam make it almost unusable.  Is there some way to avoid spam on Evil Lyrics.  I like the idea behind this plug-in but if there is even the slight possibility I will be tagging my files with spam I'll stay away.

I guess what I'm asking is, how does your plug-in avoid spam-filled lyrics?
Title: Re: Evil Lyrics Plugin (Alpha Edition)
Post by: Mr ChriZ on March 16, 2006, 09:18:22 am
I'm afraid Spam is down to EvilLyrics.
I get an event message from EvilLyrics saying that lyrics have been received.
EvilLyrics also tells the plugin whether the lyrics
are from a "trusted source".  If they are not from a trusted
source the plugin does not save them in the tags.
If theres any problems with this then it's down
to EvilLyrics to be resolved, the plugin is just a bridge between
Media Center and EvilLyrics.

I don't know what a trusted source is, and whether trusted sources
ever distribute spam.
No one has reported it here, but I guess you'd have to try it and see...
I may add the option of using non trusted sources in the future.

Thanks for your work Mr. Chriz  :)

Just installed the new build and I can confirm that the minimize problem has been perfectly solved.

I have a doubt what respects to the tag updating. I've selected the option to "update the tag - overwrite with user confirmation", but I've not been asked for any confirmation and the tag has not been updated although the plug-in has retrieved the correct lyrics. How can I manage those confirmations? Am I supossed to get a confirmation dialogue popping-up somehow? It didn't

Thanks again.
Title: Re: Evil Lyrics Plugin (Beta Edition)
Post by: Mr ChriZ on March 16, 2006, 02:37:47 pm
I spent some time testing this myself!
It means that EvilLyrics does not believe the lyrics
are from a trusted source.  Therefore no messagebox will be presented,
as the plugin will not store them.

I'm thinking about adding a simple logging system to it,
to show what has been used and whats ignored.

As mentioned above I also will probably add an option to allow non trusted
sources, however there are definitley some dodgy things it pulls up
so i'm not so sure this is a good idea.

Personally i think the confirmation system will actually drive people nuts after a while.
Title: Re: Evil Lyrics Plugin (Beta Edition)
Post by: Deivit on March 16, 2006, 02:43:51 pm
OK, I got now the message box but it was in the following scenario:

- A song did not previously have lyrics.
- The plug-in located the lyrics from a reliable source and updated the tag.
- Since the lyrics were not correct, I manually clicked on the green button with the right arrow to try more sites and found a different version, which was also considered as reliable.
- I immediately got the message box saying that the song already had lyrics and asking for a confirmation.

Tested again with a song that had lyrics before running through the plug-in. It found the correct lyrics from a reliable source (since I coud see the green confirmation tag in the lower right corner) but no message box was displayed for me to confirm and thus the tag was not updated.

I would not add that option for non trusted sources... even the trusted ones are bad lyrics or spam in some of the cases so  ;)

What respects to the confirmation system, you may be right that people can get nuts after a while. What happens if you are not paying attention and do not click on the message box? Could it block the program? I don't know how difficult could this be to implement, but perhaps a solution would be showing the message box for let's say 1 minute and if the user does not click yes, assume that "no" is the answer, hide the message box  and do not update the tag. I'm thinking in those cases that you're not there to confirm the message box... Just an idea.

Bear in mind that you do need to change track before the plugin
will send an update to EvilLyrics.  Simply rewinding the track is insufficient.

I'm unsure as to whether the green tick indicates trusted source or not.
Still playing with that.  I don't think it is.  I'll do more testing though.

Your timer suggestion on the messagebox is a good one.
Currently the user could become inundated with MessageBoxes.

Thank you  :)

Yeh I've just done some more testing.
I've got a messagebox telling me the result of the incoming
TrustedSource.

And everytime I ask for coldplay lyrics it returns
a non trusted result.  However by hitting the "Try Next Result"
a trusted result is always returned.

Seems like EvilLyrics itself may have a bug...
In that it doesn't always go to trusted sources first.

This is a non-important issue, but I figured I'd keep you all posted.  The "Kareoke (sp)" feature... kinda neat if you've played with it, HOWEVER... In my experience using it with Winamp, it would keep track of where you are in the song regardless of whether or not you rewind.... not working with this plugin... am I asking too much?  Really a small issue, but I thought I'd keep you (all) informed.  -Thomas

I'm afraid thats not a part of the interface I've been
given.
I think the integration with Winamp does not work through
a plugin interface like this.
The guy who made EvilLyrics is considering a similar thing
for MC, which would make the plugin redundant.

Title: Re: EvilLyrics Plugin (Beta Edition)

what are you trying to do with message boxes?

On reflection I think I'm trying to fix a bug that doesn't exist, I think the message
boxes are static so a new one will overwrite the old one, need to investigate this...

However this I have found another bug, where EvilLyrics doesn't seem to want to
send a new event without the first one being complete, so will have to add
some threading in.

well you can use a form and create your own message box, and you can put a timmer in it to dismiss it if you just want to display it for lets say a few seconds.

that is something you can't do with a message box.

Your plugin is AWESOME... when I was using the trial MC, I found the lack of EvilLyrics integration a huge con because I've been using it for so long with other players...  found your plugin and that sealed the deal.

Is there a way to set it so that it doesn't automatically start whenever MC is started?  If not, any plans to implement this in future versions?

Dumb question, but how do I install the plugin?

I downloaded and installed EvilLyrics.  No problem there.

I downloaded the plugin.  It is called setup.rar.  The .rar file is not an executable, so I don't know what to do with it.

Not dumb at all, I'll add it to the instructions.
You may have heard of zip files, they are compressed files,
windows xp allows you to create them.
Rar files is a kind of competing format, been around for years sorta thing.
Technically it's slightly better I think, although I can't say I've researched it much
So in order to get the setup out of the rar  you'll need something to open the rar files.
Most people use something called WinRar
a free trial of which is available here (http://www.download.com/3000-2250-10007677.html)

Mr ChriZ, I just wanted to let you know that I recently tried this and it's awesome! I usually try King's lyric finder and when it doesn't have them I have to go manually and try to find them on the web. This gets probably 95% of the ones I need after that now. And yes King, I'll upload them to your site after.   ;)

=)  I'm glad Stimpco suggested the idea.  It's actually quite good fun just having that
little window to check the lyrics of songs as they play.  I have EvilLyrics Minimized
to the trayicon.  I really can't take to much credit for the plugin.  It's only about
40 lines of code!

You provide an option to disable/enable the plug-in.  Even if the plug-in is disabled, EvilLyrics is started up.  Is there a way to not start EvilLyrics?  I only want it started when I'm searching for lyrics.

Mr ChriZ,

I noticed that the plug-in does not work when you go to the next track and the title is the same as the prior track.  This is true if the artist is the same or different.

Thank you for adding this plugin.  It was just the perfect addition to Media Center.

I have to confess that I did have some difficulty installing the plugin.

I apparently only had 1.1 NET installed and that was the reason the plugin didnt work initally.

I did try to install 2.0 but I use Firefox as my defualt browser and Microsoft blocks Firefox from their download site.  I tried using IE but only got a blank screen, even with Firefox closed.  Ultimately I had to do a google search for donetfx.exe to find a mirror site to d/l it and install.  After that all worked great.

If you are having diffculties, please try the above suggestions.

MEDIA CENTER ROCKS !!!!

Mr ChriZ, I have got all my lyrics complete now. I don't want to uninstall your plugin because I may add more files and then will want to use it again. I can go into the plugin and disable evil lyrics which is fine for that session, however if I close MC and restart it, the setting is not saved and Evil Lyrics starts up again.

Without uninstalling it, how can I have it remember the disable and not start Evil Lyrics?
Thanks,
Jeff

Are you on the latest build?
You haven't installed it to a Read only drive or anything?

I think I figured out the difference. I installed MC 184 and it didn't remember the setting between installs. I disabled the plugin and had to reboot. Starting MC again I noticed that the setting was remembered. So I guess it was just between installs it somehow didn't remember.

This is the second instance of this message thats been brought up this week.
I've not had internet access for the past week, because of upgrades bringing

Anyhow not sure whats causing the problem.
Try uninstalling both EvilLyrics and the plugin.
Then Reinstall EvilLyrics (To be on the safe side make sure it goes in the default directory)
Then reinstall the plugin.

I have the same problem as the poster above.  I just installed evil lyrics & the plugin for the first time today.  Never used it before.  I am using the newest version of MC - downloaded it a few days ago.

When I load MC, the window pops up complaining about a fatal error - (same as listed above in the post).  Evil Lyrics does run, but I'm guessing it's not functioning properly.

I believe the problem is that different versions/builds of EvilLyrics use a different GUID for the COM connection (LyricsRequest). So the Interop.EvilLyrics.dll from your build will be trying to connect using a GUID that does not exist. I have seen 46A8F814-5F6E-4BF4-B6F1-C4E0F0AEF920 and 1FB8C46D-4D26-4EEB-837A-7C9107431D73 for differsnt installs of EL. Tough one to fix since EL is not good about version numbers so it is hard to say works with version X.

I'm having the same problem with this plugin.

Has it been caused by a change to Media center, or the plugin?  I ask as this was working up to last week when I decided to reinstall my OS.  I am using the nightlyjuly version of evil lyrics mentioned on the meedio forums but downloaded the current version of the plugin and media center.  If it is the plugin is it possible to get hold of an earlier version.

Cheers,
Jon.

Plugin hasn't been changed in some time, nor has EvilLyrics.
I'm going to investigate this as soon as possible.

Dhills suggestion on the GUID should not be a problem.
GUID's are assigned by windows when an application installs itself in the Registry.
A GUID is an extremly long random number.  Hence it will be different
from install to install.  By some mechanism I can't quite remember
the plugin requests for EvilLyrics and it all magically works.

The message written in the posts above however indicates that the
interface between evillyrics and the plugin isn't working.

I'll do some testing on a clean machine and get back as soon as possible.
Everythings seriously crazy here though I've just moved house,

OK So why doesn't it work....

Well... Marek seems to have produced a new
EvilLyrics 0.1.8 Build 141 RC3

Confused?
Yeh so was I.
Some people might call it RC4.  Or Build 142,
or even Version 0.1.9....
Anyhow lucky for us FileForums are still hosting the old one
and it is available oddly enough with the old interface, here->
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/EvilLyrics/1052149889/1

Notice how it is about 120k smaller than the one thats
currently available to download from the EvilLyrics website.
In time I'll get the interface for the new one, and update the plugin.

Edit: Marek has now updated the version numbers.
The old version also pops up on a regular basis now saying please update.
I'm looking into it.  At present I can't get an interface to the new version.

Mr ChriZ, I have a copy of a setup that says 0.1.8 RC3 before installing but the about box says 0.1.7 build 141 after installing. If you want a copy of that, I can send it to you.

Did you get a response from Marek regarding the new version of evil lyrics?

Yes I have, and am looking into it.
In the mean time the old version can be used with the current plugin.

I got the old version working, but I fail to see the point.  Everything I tried ended up with no results.  The search string was exactly what it should have been, and I pored over the FAQ and info on the EvilLyrics site--to no avail.  Quite annoying.

It's working here fine.  Is it possible something is stopping EvilLyrics from
accessing the lyrics sites?  A firewall maybe?
Here is a search string which definitley returned lyrics
"Alanis Morissette - 21 Things I Want In a Lover"

I'm not going to be around for the next three days, so you may
do better seeking support from the EvilLyrics site itself.

You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to make spare time for little projects
like these!  As soon as it happens again, I'll have a look at sorting out
a plugin for the new version.

Mr ChriZ,
Looking at some posts on the Evil Lyrics forum it looks as though the problem has potentially been caused by a windows update.  The new version fixes this but obviously breaks your plugin.  I hadn't actually upgraded to the new version, the lyrics just stopped downloading one day.

Cheers,
Jon.

Yup it's broke here too now :-(
I've taken a look at Mareks email which suggests that the interface should still work,
but I've tried a few different coding languages and a few different computers and it's not working
for me, so i've sent another email back to him.  Hopefully he can sort something out for us.

Thank you for the update, Mr. ChriZ!  The plugin now works (again) for me.  One glitch... when media center starts up, evillyrics also starts up, but is in a "hidden" window.  I have to shut down evillyrics through task manager, then restart it, and it works fine... is it "user error"?   :o  Thanks for your continued support!

Yeh I've been noticing problems with it disappearing,

I'll have to knock on Mareks door again. Hopefully get it sorted soon.

Mr Chriz,
Meedio is a now (sadly) defunct HTPC software.  It includes a plugin for using MC as it's music player allowing the music library to be browsed through a 10ft interface with a remote control.  When music is playing the Now Playing screen allows for various options such as visualisations and lyrics to be displayed.

Cheers,
Jon.

Uninstall the version you've got of both the plugin and evillyrics
then reinstall the latest versions.

Evil lyrics prompted me to install the newest version (which I did) and now the plug-in stopped working.  It still launches Evil Lyrics when MC starts but it doesn't "see" MC when I play music.  If I open the plug-in options within MC (tree-->Services & Plugins-->Evil Lyrics and select "enable Evil Lyrics" or "Disable Evil Lyrics" I get the following Microsoft .NET Framework error:

Hi iCamp,
Could you try installing the latest plugin from the Skins & Plugins Section.
It maybe you've not got the latest version installed, or it could be
that theres a new version of EvilLyrics, in which case i will
need to investigate further.

I just downloaded and installed the plugin from the main page.  Is it OK just to install on top of my previous install?  That's what I did and I'm still getting the same error.

I think there is a new version of Evil Lyrics.  It's version 0.1.9 final build 143.

Thank you

Old evil lyrics plugin was working fine on my system.

Installed new version of evil lyrics.  The app runs properly and shows the new version.

Went into MC plugin manager and uninstalled old evil lyrics plugin.
Exited MC.
Ran the new evil lyrics plugin setup.exe
Started MC.
New evil lyrics plugin shows up in plugin manager showing version 1.1.2.0
Click on the "show" button to use the plugin.
Get  error popup message "Internal Application Error".    :(
Already had .net 2.0 installed, but went ahead and reinstalled it from the link in this post just in case.
Didn't make any difference.  Still can't run the plugin, even after the reboot.

OK 2 issues.
1.  I put up the debug version of the setup files instead of the release version.  Oops.
(The release version is still 1.1.2, since that is what the build files are)

2. I think theres 2 different builds of evillyrics 143 again.  Make sure you
have the latest one from the website.

Top post updated with new build.
Should now work in MC11 again.

Was eagerly waiting for the update but it still has the invisible windows syndrome for me.
Just uninstalled both, (re)downloaded and installed the latest builds and the EvilLyrics Window pops up briefly and then is gone. Have to close in Taskmanager and start it manually. From there the plugin works fine...

Can I provide any information to track that issue down?
Basics: I use Windows XP and MC 12

Peculiar.
When you go to about in EvilLyrics what build information comes up?
Also when you go the plugin within Media Center do you see an option
"Include Video Files"?
Title: Re: EvilLyrics Plugin
Post by: iCamp on June 12, 2007, 05:49:20 pm
I might be having the same problem as difool.

Windows Task Manager shows Evil Lyrics (build 143) running but I can't see the window.  Nothing I do will force it to appear.

Because of that I don't know if Evil Lyrics is even communicating with the plugin.  I know it isn't writing lyrics to the tag.

In an effort to try to force the Evil Lyrics window to remain visible (just to see if it was even trying to look up playing tracks in MC12) I used the "Always stay on top" option within the Evil Lyrics preferences.  Evil Lyrics did stay on tip but once MC12 loaded it made Evil Lyrics disappear again.

BTW, my version of the plug-in does have the "Include video files" option.  However, I do not have that checked.
Title: Re: EvilLyrics Plugin
Post by: iCamp on June 12, 2007, 06:19:14 pm
Ok...nevermind.

It appears to be working now.  I realized I still had MC11 installed on my PC.  I kept it just in case the MC12 beta didn't function quite right.  I never had any issues with both installed but figured it was just taking up space.  I uninstalled it and the Evil Lyrics plugin suddenly began writing lyrics to tags.  Cool!

I still can't see the Evil Lyrics window but at least it's writing tags!

This is a complete above and beyond, no beg, for help. The evillyrics works fine in MC, which is why this is above and beyond, however I am having trouble getting it working in Meedio. It is related to this plugin because interop.evillyrics.dll from the MC plugin is what the J River Meedio plugin uses to work with the new version of evillyrics. This is the error I am getting:

Quote
14-Aug-2007 17:31:31:694 : 00.00.063 : [  2180] : EXCEPTION (EOleException) : Delivering message "plugin.loaded" to MC Media Player (26) : Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.EvilLyrics, Version=1.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified

14-Aug-2007 17:31:31:944 : 00.00.250 : [  2180] : EXCEPTION (EOleException) : Delivering message "plugin.system-loaded" to MC Media Player (26) : Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.EvilLyrics, Version=1.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified

Now, not being a developer, this is a bit of Greek to me. I am not asking for any specific help with Meedio, however, could anyone help me with this error? What dependency is missing? I am not compeltely unable to do a bit of basic checking, so I used Dependswalker (url (http://www.dependencywalker.com/)) which is a handy tool I've used before to find DLL dependency problems. There was nothing missing or any issuess. Just to be sure, I installed VC++ redistributable which, according to its depenecies, this dll uses some DLLs from. That didn't do it. I, of course, have .net 2.0 and .net 3.0 installed as the plugin is working fine in MC.

Thanks for any help!

Might do better on the Meedio forums.

Thank you for your reply! We are beginning to try and get DHill back to his MC project (link (http://www.meedios.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1294&highlight=)). Currently he has abandoned it after Yahoo go TV is clearly not going anywhere and he was unaware of the very active MeediOS project (link (http://www.meedios.com)). Is there any assistance you can give me in regards to this error? What dependencies could be hanging it up? The prior version of interop.evillyics.dll was working fine. I would actually go back but I no longer have a copy of that plugin or the prior version of EvilLyrics. But another user did affirm that this new interop was working in his setup (I would link it but the Meedio forums are currently unavailable, possibly for good). Thanks for any continued assistance!

Edit: Got it working, used the interop from Shawn Bass's Meedio Evillyric plugin and all is working. Hope that helps someone else.

Autolyrix seems nice. I didn't actually install it or anything, but from what I gathered on the infopage.

I used to use EvilLyrics w/ winamp, and it was very nice. Could never get the thing to work with MC, and then it seemed that EvilLyrics had some major Vista-problems too.

Keep up the good work!

I've spoken to the AutoLyrix chap, and he seems really friendly.  He's creating an interface so that I can create a plugin
for MC.  Hopefully should have something up soon.

AutoLyrix is open source as well, and seems to have a very active development going on.

=)

Could you make the new plugin available, both links are down.

I'm getting the errors noted above so I'd like to try the new version.

thanks

I've started to develop the AutoLyrix plugin.  The last build of the EvilLyrics plugin
no longer works, so I don't see the point in re-uploading it.

As of late, I've been using Minilyrics... seems to be pretty solid, and configurable... also ready to go with JRiver.  Check it out... :)

Minilyrics... seems to be pretty solid

I wouldn't say that....

Is Minilyrics the only lyrics viewer, capable fo handling .lrc files, available for MC?

I'm testing it out now. Seems sort of neat I think. It works OK. Still looking forward to the autolyrix plugin though.

UPDATE: It's sort of lacking in available lyrics...

UPDATE2: Also it seems to be an evaluation version, a popup just told me...

...well, the one flaw I've run into with minilyrics... I store all my media AND the minilyrics files on a server (so I don't get duplicates)... and there is a slight delay in JRiver when minilyrics has to go out to get new lyrics... lightning fast when its already got them in it's database... and I HIGHLY recommend you DON'T try that set up on a 10/100 network, you'll see massive lags.  Stored locally, the minilyrics library jams, you'd never see the issue.  On my gigabit network, there is a slight delay (maybe 1-2 seconds?) after you switch tracks where the music will play but the time won't run on the song and you can't switch tracks until it grabs the lyric.  Issue doesn't occur on previously listened to songs.  All in all, I'm happy with it, even if it's only a stopgap till we get the JRiverness fired up. :)

Is there any progress on the autolyrix plugin?

dropped the ball on this one...
Sadly work is getting the better of me at the moment, so all my projects
have ground to a halt again  :(

I can't give any estimates at the moment....
