It seems to me you can do with a view scheme everything you can do with a smartlist, even more since you can also manage the way to display the list, but may be I am missing some point ?
What do you think ?

I have not used views much.
But, I don't use MC for video, images, etc. Just music.
For that, smartlists seem to be fine, in fact the one thing MC has going above all others in my opinion.
-
smartlist based viewschemes and handheld sync'ing are two that spring to mind instantly, then you have smartlists that are really only any use for playback (grab me a list of files and play them), making the overhead of a viewscheme redundant.
mc would not be mc without its smartlist, trust me :)

View schema are also for music.

Copy an existing smartlist rule, add a view scheme and paste the rule in the field 'step 4' at the bottom => you get exactly the same list ;D
You can to do everything you can do with a smartlist, using exactly the same syntax.
So we can say smartlist and view scheme are redundant concepts.
But we can say also that view schemes are more powerful than smartlists because using a view scheme you can set also a specific way to display the list, with panes (but only if you want).
So IMHO smartlists are useless.
Handheld sync'ing could be done using a view scheme, that doesn't justify to "invent" smartlist only for that.

You can use Random modifiers in a smartlist....
If you create a new view, the tracks are listed as a view... If you use Random in with a smartlist, your tracks are always in a different order.
They are similar, but there are uses for Smartlists.
-
I think both viewschemes & smartlists have their place. Smartlists are much faster than vieschemes to display.. yeah a viewscheme is nice but redundant in this case.

You can use Random Sorting also with a view scheme !

It is not true if you don't set panes in a view scheme but only a rule as in a smartlist.

You have a point there..... I played around a bit, and it does seem redundent....
But, what harm are they doing.... :-\
-
I think that one benefit of having smartlists is that they are a lot easier for new users to get a handle on. Most people come to MC with some understanding of the "playlist" concept, but I would imagine that it takes people awhile to figure out what to do with a view scheme. I know that I used MC for a year or so before I ever created my own view scheme.

Key difference: You can sync smartlists (as well as playlists) to your handheld device.

Why couldn't you import the results of a view to your Ipod.... It shouldn't be to hard to change...
The author has a very valid point.....

It is quicker to see the smartlist ...in a smartlist,
than the smartlist in a view scheme.
less clicks :)

Being able to do on the fly instant complex smartlist rules in the middle of browsing the library would pretty much be the ultimate in browsing flexibility!
Right now the search functionality is hard to easily add smartlist rules without multiple clicks and typing.
I'm thinking some sort of saved favorites kind of menu in the search drop down that can be edited like the navigation toolbar would work. ;D

I look at it exactly this way. View Schemes are so much more flexible. I used to have a lot of "Radio Station Like" smartlists which I have now since converted to View Schemes (right about when they added the new "header" to the Smartlists for version 11.0), and I haven't really used Smartlists for much of anything since.
I have a fairly powerful system admittedly, but I can't see any speed difference between using the two. You can add Root View Schemes too so if you wanted them to be in their own "place" on the Tree (just like the Smartlists) you could...
As far as syncing is concerned... I don't yet have an iPod (or similar device) -- I'm still using a Rio Volt MP3 CD Player -- so I don't know, but if that doesn't currently work for View Schemes... It seems like the feature should be added rather than arbitrarily preventing it from working on View Schemes.

I have been using MC for over 3 years now and have never used a "viewsceme", but use smartlists all the time, so they are not redundant to me.
-
So then, would ~fill be a valid view parameter?

Hah, and i thought i was the only one :)

I agree....when I go to sleep, I just boot up MC and double-click on "2 hours relaxing"-smartlist, then I can go to bed :)
