Title: MC11 & Xbox 360
Post by: ossie1971 on March 02, 2006, 07:14:37 am
Hi Guys

Just recently been converted to & bought MC 11 & love it. The other day my better half kindly treated me to an Xbox 360 (Although she selfishly neglected to include the 42" HD television I've been dropping subtle hints about  ;D )

While setting up the Xbox yesterday I managed to connect to Twonkyvision UPnP server to stream my Music & Photos but couldn't get it to recognise the MC server(Error unable to authorise). Am I missing something obvious? I know microsoft have serious problems in sticking to standards adopted by the rest of the industry but can anyone tell me whether their is likely to be support for the 360 in the near future? please please say yes!

Cheers

ossie

I don't think there's any way to get this working right now.  I don't believe that MS implemented UPnP on the Xbox.

Hi Thanks for the prompt reply, I'm fairly sure they have implemented a "Version" of UPnP as the Twonkyvision UPnP server is supported on the Xbox - The only problem with that is that I am really limited to using iTunes to organise just my music :(

Looks like things have changed since last time I investigated this. The XBox may support a restricted version of UPnP (no video). Go to www.ethereal.com and download their packet sniffer, run it, and get a sniff of the XBox trying to connect to Media Center, then e-mail it to me (gateley @ jriver.com), and I'll see what's going on.

Yes I did, haven't had a chance to look yet, thanks for the reminder. Bump this thread if you don't hear from me in a couple of days...

I'm curious about this also. Right now, I'm only sharing my MP3 on the 360, but with this working I could share my whole collection.

Thanks.

I need ethereal sniffs please, not txt files. Ethereal has tools that help me look through the output...

Just sent you the capture.  I filtered out everything not originating from the xbox360 ip.  I hope this is what you need to enable this functionality.

I looked at the sniffs, and despite info to the contrary, the Xbox is NOT UPnP compatible - it requires a Microsoft protocol on top of UPnP. I'm looking into licensing this additional protocol.

I don't mean to sound impatient, but is there any news about this?  ::)

Hate to bring this back up, but, is there a possibility the protocol will be licensed.  I need to determine how I am going to connect while I reconfigure my media area.

Perhaps it's worth asking Microsoft to support the well defined UPnP standard.

If they wanted to play nicely, they could add this to a future firmware / software revision.
