Title: Problems with conversion to MP3
Post by: Bibo on March 11, 2006, 04:28:28 am
This is my 1st message - hello everybody.
Please be patient with me because I'm not too experienced with Media Center.

I tried MC a while ago - v11.0.xx - and it was ok. By placing Lame program into Plugin directory, I could convert file to MP3 very easily.
I am trying MC v11.1.13x and, when I try to convert to MP3, it says that plugin is missing and it wants to connect to a certain directory over the Internet. However, my system with MC is NOT connected to the Internet.
I read that v11.1.xxx has some new developments with MP3. I downloaded the latest required version of Lame and placed it in the Plugin directory, as I did in the past, but conversion to MP3 is still not possible.
It is possible, however, if I select External Encoder/Lame, but it is not very practical.

Is there something I am supposed to do about MP3 Lame encoding? Probably something simple I am not aware of...
Indeed there is no installation procedure regarding Lame - I discovered through trial and error, and reading the forum, that I had to place Lame into Plugin directory...

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Bibo,
Welcome.  There is a FAQ here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=10029.0

In it, you'll find a link to "Problems downloading plug-ins" that will provide a work-around.

I think Bibo probably needs to know which files need
to go into the plugin directory for the lame encoder.
The link you've posted there Jim only talks about plugins with
MJP files, but I don't think there is an MJP file for the lame encoder is there?

Edit
If you look through the plugin pages,
there is one for MC 10.0, but not 11.0?
Is it the same?

I think MC needs a gogo.exe file besides a lame.exe. Go-Go is a new faster mp3 encoding option. (Make a forum search for more information about Go-Go).

Download LAME 3.97 from here: http://www.rarewares.org/dancer/dancer.php?f=109
and GoGo-no-coda 3.13 from here: http://www.rarewares.org/files/mp3/gogo313.zip.

Place the mentioned exe files in the [MC program path]\Plugins\ folder.

If you look through the plugin pages,
there is one for MC 10.0, but not 11.0?
Is it the same?

It is different.

Following the instruction for downloading plugins where MC is not resident it did the trick. I have now registered Lame and Go-go encoders
Thank you.

However, in v.11.0.xx I could simply place the Lame encoder in the Plugins folder and it worked. Why did you decide to implement this "registration" format? For people, like me, who do not have MC internet connected, it is a more convoluted method.

I don't understand what you mean by "registration format".

Normally MC11.1 downloads the encoder files automatically when mp3 encoding is accessed for the first time.

If you don't have an Internet connection you can place the lame.exe and gogo.exe files in the Plugins folder before trying to use mp3 encoding. In that case MC will not bother you with the download prompt.

As far as I know, the only change is that the gogo.exe file is needed besides the lame.exe file.
