Title: Incomplete Shutdown DISABLE?
Post by: gregoryx on March 24, 2006, 08:47:46 pm
I know that this was asked months back, but I haven't found a real answer to it: can we disable this "incomplete shutdown" thing?

The instability in the system I'm working with has nothing to do with MC, but the fact that MC won't fire back up after a forced shutdown (of Windows) is causing some grief.

Can I disable this (otherwise) wonderful function somehow?

Just hit cancel when it happens.

I am indeed that brilliant. I am familiar with the keyboard. ;) :P

The issue is for the cases where the system itself resets (not a MC problem, per se) and I'm not around. That little "Incomplete Shutdown" box is making it so that folks in my household don't listen to MC-based music because if the server is reset MC never comes back and works again.

I'm controlling MC through Main Lobby. I pull from the library server when I'm at the office. No-one actually SEES the MC machine that is the server. Neither case puts a person in front of a keyboard. If - for whatever reason... such as while testing things of late - the system resets, MC is not usable without direct human intervention. That was not the case before this new "feature".  ;)

How 'bout an INI setting that could be manually edited?

Newer MC 11.1's will only show this after two incomplete shutdowns in a row.

Less would be good. "Turn it off" check box would be better.  ;)

At the risk of sounding pedantic, don't you have bigger problems than an extra dialog if a machine is repeatedly crashing?

Sure. I have a lot of problems. Most are much more personal than I'll post on a web site.  ;)

That said, speaking "narrowly, often ostentatiously learned" myself ('cause the word pedantic was a bit too long for me), why NOT add the ability to turn it off?  :o

Hi Matt,

This dialog is a real pain, especially when developing plugins.   Can you put the counter in the registry so developers can up it to something that won't cause interruptions when debugging?

Even better could we have a propper stop button which releases the the plugin so that we don't
need to close Media Center each time we rebuild  :) (My house mates get very fed
up of me getting 20 seconds into a song.. and then restarting it...)
I admit thats wishful thinking however  8)

Hmmm I wonder if I could make a plugin which allows dynamic plugin
loading/unloading.
It would be a plugin plugin tester.  :)

I totally agree. I don't have a Keyboard in my range to press "cancel", and i allways switch off my jukebox with the power-off switch.

I'm sure others will pipe in here, but I'd really recommend not doing that.
I know hard-drives have had self parking heads for a long time now,
but still if the harddrives in the middle of writting something
then it's gonna leave a corruption somewhere.  Windows
is notorious for going away and doing housework at random
moments, so I'd reckon your gambling abit there.

Whats wrong with the shutdown button?
Have you tried the Hibernate system?  It physically shutsdown the computer
but allows it to boot up to the same state it was in  before
you shut it down, and is generally faster than a normal boot up.
If you have a sleep key you can hook the hibernate up to it,
so you have a 1 key shutdown.

Thanks for your explanations and hints, but the hibernation does not work in my case as it should work. After 3 or 4 reboots, the system hangs elsewhere and i made the experience, that you should shut down windows after some reboots to get back all the availible memory and resources. But i must say, that my Jukebox was born in a generation where hibernation and sleep mode was not very common.
MC must not do new things. I am using 11.0316 with no problems, checkboxes or something else for over 1 year. My harddisk is still working fine. So i don't understand why i have to answer theese "shutdown things" in V.11.xxx

can you not put a small checkbox "Do not show this next time" ?
HOORAY!!!
It's there in the latest version! I really don't care if it has a problem shutting down, just so it does (and runs well the next time it's started) ;)
