It seems that this is by design, according to Matt's answer in this other thread I started.

Another Bug And Reported More Than once Is
Boot MC
Go To "Start"
Click On The Search Box
Type 1 Letter or Number
You Will See "Go" In the Search Box On the Right Side
Acualy In "Start" the Search Box Should Be .Enabled = False

Yea it took me a while to understand how it works as well.
I think the search should be independent of the library and vice versa.
i.e. i type something in the search box and the only time that is removed, is if I change a view scheme or manually remove it from the search box.
Accordingly, if I search for something, the tile browsing system should be unaffected by this other than what is indexed and perform its standard filtering.

I think MJ6 did not remove the search text and some users got confused as to where there files went.
i would prefer MC not to remove the search text unless i remove it manually. when i swich back and forth i find my self needing to retype in the search rules and it becomes a pain.
I wish it was user selectable with a pop-up notice for beginners.

...or a search history where you easily could select earlier searches...would be great!

or a 'navigation' style saved favorites of searches.
