Title: Unable to Rip to WMA Lossless After Installing WMP 11
Post by: T2Mac on May 22, 2006, 07:57:13 am
Using MC version 11.1.184 I'm no longer able to zip to WMA Lossless after installing WMP 11. I get the error 'Read track failed. Failed to initiailze the encoder plugin' in the Rip Progress box.

I tried this on a couple of systems with the same result. I also uninstalled WMP & reinstalled MC again with the same result.

WMP11 beta has different WM codecs. Apparently the system to access the codecs is different. Programs that use the previous WM system do not work with the new codecs. Uninstalling WMP11 beta does not remove the new and restore the old codecs for some reason.

MS has published uninstall instructions that remove the new codecs too:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer

You may need to install the previous WM codec pack separately after the uninstall process:
ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/wmfdist95.exe (http://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/wmfdist95.exe)

OK thanks Alex. I'm at work now but I'll give this a go tonight when I get home.

Alex just to let you know that following the full uninstall unstructions which you posted the link to worked without having to reinstall the previous WM codec pack.

Thanks again.

I had the same problem.  Using Windows XP System Restore function to uninstall WMP 11 works best.

Will J River make Media Center compatible with the new WMA codecs and WMP 11?

Probably JRiver will need to release a new wma encoder plugin when WMP11 becomes an official update. The encoding options are quite different.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix the lack of backwards support for encoder profiles during their beta.

If not, we'll update our encoder to handle different versions.
