Title: License Question - Multiple PCs
Post by: dcrabtree on June 13, 2006, 08:20:28 am
I want to legaly install MC 11 on multiple PCs and use the client/server functions.  I'm assuming that I need to purchase one copy per PC.  Is this correct?  Thanks.

From the MC11 Purchase FAQ (http://www.jrmediacenter.com/buy_faq11.html):
Quote
Q: Can I install on more than one PC?
A: During the two-week period after you have purchased or restored, you can use the Install Key you received to activate the program on your other PC’s. You may use the program on your work PC and on your home PC's with a single license.

After this two-week period you can always obtain a new key from the restore page (https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi). (This is limited to ten yearly restores.)

IMHO, MC has great license terms.

I should say...  This is the reason (the fact that you can use it on multiple machines without buying it multiple times) that I was willing to take the initial "risk" and buy the software way back when.  A great policy that made a believer out of me (and I've sold more than one copy of MC to my friends and cohorts so I think it was worth it for JRiver too).

It seems like Media Center is pretty popular and I know that I personally look into licensing on an application heavily before purchasing because in many cases, if I have to buy software, it is because I haven't put enough time into searching for free software.  With media software, however, it took me many hours to find Media Center, which is the only program that I would even consider.  Nothing else compares at all.

As I asked for earlier, the only feature I really would like is the ability to store all settings/plugins/etc in the Library folder and possibly a Watch Folder setting--or does it have this already?

Does this policy apply to MC10 as well?  I have a friend with MC10 at home, but he's using WMP at work, thinking that to put MC there would violate the license terms

It does.  Tell your friend to have at it.

My understanding here was that the thanks were to be passed from jriver to the cautious WMP user with regard to their dilligence over software liscencing issues.

I guess they should go back the way too, jriver's liscencing policy is remarkably sensible. (although, it's not as clear in the installer as it is on the website ;) )

Thanks for all of the responses.  Thanks to the MC folks for such a great licensing policy!  ;D
