Hey, sorry to clutter up the board here with this, but I just feel positive someone here will know what I'm talking about.
I need the name of a movie. I don't have a specific movie in mind, just a type of scene, so there's any number of different movies that could work. I just can't remember the name of any of them at the moment.
The scene that I'm thinking of goes something like this: There is a character who is nonconformist. At some point in the film, this character winds up with the proverbial 1000 yard stare on his/her face, and verbalizes agreement with those wishing the conformity. Then, you realize that the character has been brainwashed, turned into a robot or alien, or whatever. I'm hoping to obtain the name of a movie in which the character has been brainwashed into conformity, rather than replaced by a robot a la Stepford Wives.
It has to do with a paper that I'm writing. I just want to make quick reference to the movie as a metaphor (so it needs to be a fairly well-known movie in the USA) for a group of people who fought hard for a government program, but then one day suddenly switched to their opponent's position against the program.
I hope this makes some sense.
Thanks in advance.
Mike

"Grease" comes to mind. The entire message of that movie is "If your friends don't like you for who you are... Change."
-
True. I dislike that movie for that very reason. Well, that and the music.
But, I was hoping for something a bit more overtly sinister and 1984-ish.
-
Well, you can't get much worse than 1984, then. :P
I'm having a hard time thinking of anything too.
-
Equilibrium? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/) Not quite what you're talking about, but very 1984-esque.

cool hand luke?
"you're gonna stay in the box 'till we get your mind right"

How about "Brazil" directed by Terry Gilliam?
Kind of a parody of 1984...very amusing in a bent and slightly twisted way...
bureaucracy run amok...

None of these match your tihng exactly, but:
One flew over the cuckoos nest
Jack is kind of vegetablised into conformity.
Twelve Monkeys
Bruce desperately tries to believe that he is crazy and tries to conform to the 1990s world.
Brazil
The only way Johnathon Pryce can escape the horrible reality of that society is to go insane and live in his fantasy world.
Truman Show
Jim chooses to escape the confined world after he finds out about it.
Total Recall
Arnie struggles with what are real/unreal memories and how much of his life is really true.

Having absolutely no clue on if I'm responding right or not, here's two alternatives:
- Blade Runner (http://imdb.com/title/tt0083658/) (1982 with Harrison Ford chasing replicants)
- Westworld (http://imdb.com/title/tt0070909/) (1973 with Yul Brynner as an evil robot)
Hopefully it is some help, otherwise see those two, they're excellent examples of movies that cannot be done these days!

Soylent Green maybe?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers in the 1978 version with Donald Sutherland?
Just great.

Hey, thanks everyone. Loads of good ideas, expecially given the scant description that you had to work with. I turned in the paper Friday morning. I think that Invasion of the Body Snatchers would probably have been the closest thing to what I had in mind. I wound up rewriting the paragraph in such a way that the movie metaphor was unnecessary. As it tuns out, the specific scene that I had in mind came from an episode of the Outer Limits, which would have made the metaphor too cumbersome to employ.
Thanks
Mike
