I think the DirectShow options/setup need some attention.
Let's say I want to watch a video that comes to me in divx.
Let's say it plays fine in VLC and in Nero ShowTime yet does not have video in MC 12, but the sound is fine.
So, let's go setup DirectShow for divx.

There are 17-18 choices on the left and 90+ on the right.
If it is not possible to package suitable filters and provide a button to configure for more popular formats, then there should be directions/recommendations for those formats.

Yes, I would strongly suggest looking at how Zoomplayer (http://inmatrix.com/) handles this.
1) On the Inmatrix website there is a very detailed guide on installing codecs for various media types.
2) Zoomplayer itself contains a very complete database of playback graphs for most common splitters and decoders.
