Title: OT: How do I disable WinXP Autoplay?
Post by: jgreen on July 07, 2006, 04:05:09 pm
Now that I have WinXP, I hate it as much as most people do.  My current focus is the autoplay, which insists on scanning newly inserted firewire drives for something to bother me with.  Since I'm connecting/disconnecting the same drive 20 times a day (sneakernet), it presents a less-than-optimal situation.  How to I put a stop to the madness?

Since no one is chiming in I guess I will.  Microsoft makes a Powertoy for Windows XP called TweakUI that can turn off the Autoplay function for specific drives that you choose.

It's here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Once you install the program look for "My Computer" listed on the left and that will lead you to Autoplay.

No problem.  I had the same issue with my USB external drives, so I knew what that was like....

You can also regedit it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\AutoRun = 0
