I see that MC 12's library won't be compatible with 11's. I have a large (very very large) CD database and it breaks my heart to think that I will have to redo all of these disks if I want to upgrade.
Is there now, or will there be, any way to import my MC 11 CD database into 12's?

v12 will upgrade and work with a v11 database.
you won't be able to take that library back to v11 with you as v11 will not know how to handle it.
remember v12 and v11/v11.1 can co-exist.

But I can make a backup of the v11.1 library before using v12, so I can use it again with v11 if necessary?

It sounds like we'll be able to have two entirely different installs running side-by-side. Will I be able to install v12 alongside v11 and still be able to upgrade v11's db? Or can I upgrade the db only by upgrading v11?

I think you can copy the old database files to a new location and tell MC12 where they are.

As one of the "chosen" ;D, I actually have MC 10, 11.xxx, & 12 installed. They each have their own individual database.
When I upgraded from MC10 to 11.xxx, I simply did a library restore directly from the last MC10 backup zip in the MC10 Library Backup folder. MC 11.x updates the backup for the new version in the process and creates a new default backup in the MC11.x backup folder. The process for MC12 is the same.
Whichever MC is in focus on the desktop is the one that would be updated, (with v11.xxx and v12, MC10 will not open concurrently with another version although it can live on the same computer).
During the beta process, I'm still doing a lot of my tagging in MC11.1, then I do a backup and restore the MC12 db from that file. What you can't do, is go backwards, ie: restore 11.xxx from v12 or restore MC10 from 11.xxx, etc.
Once you upgrade, there is no need to keep the previous version or it's database. The new MC db will contain everything that was in the previous version.

thanks for the reassurance - are we safe to ditch current version immediately ?
For your own reassurance you should probably keep the old version, (or at least the last backup zip file, which I do anyway as a mater of course and safety), until you are comfortable with new one, (especially while it's still in beta form).
