Title: Handheld surprise
Post by: dcwebman on August 17, 2006, 12:59:40 pm
I just got a surprise when I was running MC 12. I plugged in my USB flash drive to copy some files to it and upon looking at the drive there were 2 files on it that had just been created. Hmmm... Deleted them and continued copying my files. Then I went back to MC 12 and noticed that the Drag Files Here box was open and it was my flash drive.

Whatever happened to the popup from MC about detecting a new handheld device, do I want to add it to MC? (or whatever the exact wording was)  I didn't expect it to get automatically added.

You can "Remove & Ignore" a device from options or by right-clicking the device.

We try to avoid popups after a fresh install as much as possible.

I have done the Remove & Ignore for my USB flash drive. Now how can I make MC not put these two files on it everytime I insert it?

Are you sure it created the MC files after you Removed & Ignored the device or are they still there from prior to that?

Oh they're put on everytime I insert the drive. I can delete them, remove the flash drive, reinsert, and the files are created again on the drive.

I think we're going to change it back.  My suggestion today to Matt was this:

New memory device found.  Please select how the device should be used:

[  ]  Portable media player
[  ]  Camera
[  ]  Do not use

Sounds good. I couldn't reproduce at home the 2 files put on the flash drive so will have to check my setup at work on Monday.

If you tell MC to ignore the device, it shouldn't do anything with it.

Double-check to make sure you've told MC to leave it alone.

Yup, my mistake. I swore I had the one at work ignoring the device but apparently not. I knew I didn't get the Drop Files window last week but for some reason got that window today. Sorry for the cause for concern.
