Title: I've got a problem with the fonts used on the board
Post by: dlone on September 01, 2006, 04:06:58 pm
I tried to post a message today that used the percent symbol
In the editor it displays fine, but on viewing the message from the board, all the percent symbols show up as '96'
See http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=35576.msg242381#msg242381

Does this happen for anyone else?

Um, I don't know if you mean you can see the right symbols or not - the percent symbols you typed still show as '96's here <grin>

Even odder - When adding a reply, the symbols shows corrrectly in the editor, but incorrectly in the messages underneath ?

This is what it looks like on my pc

The % (per cent, not 96) looks good here, and in other of your posts.  Maybe it's something to do with your  language setting on this board, or on your machine?

Thanks for the reply  :)

Everything I can check looks ok - my locale is set to UK in all the places it can be set
I've got a standard WinXP setup without any strange addons

The odd thing is that is the only place it happens - every other board/program is fine and even the edit box show the correct symbol - it's just the main forum pages that are incorrect

How odd  ?

Strange, as you say.  I'm UK based and everything looks fine here, so that probably narrows it down to something in your local setup.  Sorry I can't be of any more help :'(

No, that helps a lot  :)

Probably a font has been replaced by something I installed - I think it's verdana, so I'll hunt it down off the install cd

cheers

How about another browser?

I've tried IE and firefox and they both show the same problem  ?
But, it only shows up on the forum pages -  if i post a message the edit box displays the correct symbol
The only thing I can think of is that you use a different font for the two areas and that the font you use for the main forum has been replaced by a bad version on my pc
I replaced all the fonts on my PC with the ones off my WinXP cd and it still didn't help - now I'm stuck?

It's not a showstopper, I'm just curious to why everyone else sees it OK but I can't, and why it only happens on this board  ;)

Try increasing your text size. 96 would look like percent sign if you imagine squeezing them closer to each other. % would look like 96 in certain fonts when text size is small.

<grin> at first I thought they were just odd looking percents
theres a screen snap somewhere above that you can double check if you like  ;D

Though you'll have to delete the http:// from the link - for some reason I can't get the http:// to go away  ?

erm, I think it's just your eyes!

Those in your screenshot very definitely ARE percent signs!!

Nope  - zoom in and you'll see that you're wrong, but it is a really close call
There's no line between the '0's, and the 6 and 9 are pretty obvious
At first glance it does look like a precent symbol, but when you examinate it it's not

zoom in and you'll see that you're wrong,

That does not prove anything. You took a screen shot at a font size when % does look like 96. Zooming would not help because the resolution is too small to distinguish the two.

You should take another screen shot when the font size is the largest.

Nope, they're very definitely % symbols.

It's just that your brain is convinced that it's 96 and you for some reason are unable to see it any other way now.

There's even a gap, though, between the line and the two 'o' bits on each side. You wouldn't have that with a 9 and a 6.

Does it really make a difference anyway? It's just the way that font particular works...

Grin  - your probably all right (pesky font sizes)
