Title: MC12: Skip Count
Post by: enervation on September 13, 2006, 11:31:21 am
MC 12 feature request: blatantly copied off the new itunes 7, but adding a skipcount as well as a playcount would be great!

This also leads me on to wondering about some kind of auto-rating algorithm... e.g. MC takes into account how many times you listen to something all the way through, how fast you skip it if you do, how many times you have actively chosen that specific track/album/artist... ratings of similar songs etc, and auto-rate your music (in addition to user ratings as well).

what is a skipcount?

does not the tophits play list basicly rate a track based on your playing the files?

skipcount is how many times the track has been skipped, e.g. it starts playing but you press next / select something else before it finishes.

Yes, tophits does sort of rate your top music in a way, but playcount is not a perfect measure of how good a track is.

that's something i think i would like - a lot of albums have one particular track that you hate - being able to have a smartlist that ignored the 'i hate it' tracks would be great

better, would be able to set an option to automatically skip tracks you don't like (triggered by you skipping to the next track a few times after playback), but this would be hard to implement and could result in false 'ignores' for songs you like but skip because you want to get to the next one

another option would be a field for 'hate it' and when MC plays back it would skip those tracks (kind of a rating of -1)
the idea being that you could select an album to play and not have to listen to the songs you don't like

Rate the file with one star.

;D but one star is currently used for songs I like a bit

songs i hate are so far below one star.....  ;D

songs i can't stand are so far below zero stars
currently i use custom fields, but it's a valid point - if you want to rate a song there should be a negative value as well (one star means to me that i like it a bit, not that i hate it)

My Kiss Rating System

I Like 5 Stars
I Hate 0 Stars (Or I Hit The Delete Button)

but, all new imports are zero stars?
and i don't hate all my new imports - at worst i'd give zero stars an 'unrated'  :)

but then i'm lazy and only get around to rating a song after a few plays
at first listen it may be be the best song ever, but after repeated hearing some songs just die on you
until i'm certain, my rating is zero and currently there's no way to say 'i don't like this track' but still keep it just incase you change your mind
some songs only grow on you after repeated hearings
for instance i never did like the 'throwing muses' a few years ago, but now after having a few problems I can understand the songs in a way that i never could have before
if i had just deleted them i would have missed so much that i just didn't understand before
there may be tracks i don't understand right now that i hate, but deleteing them is a really drastic step - in six months i might regret it

------
currently listening to 'hate my way' by the throwing muses

Not to mention that some songs are so bad that they're good.  I like to keep them around just to torture people.

Like "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger for example...

"You're motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight"

(Ha ha.  Now it'll be stuck in your head too!)

itself blatantly copied off the "score system" in Amarok (http://amarok.kde.org).

Which is trying desperately to provide a solution for Linux but is still a few yrs behind MC.

I posted in the iPod forum requesting the feature too.

So just putting in my hand to say this would be a very nice feature to have.

depends in what area.
As far as the scoring system and the integration of last.fm (with suggestions you can play right from within the player's interface) go, Amarok is definitely ahead.
Let's not forget either that Amarok is free. I wonder where that program would be today if they had their users pay for licenses.

Wherever it came from, this is a very interesting idea.  I'd love to see something like it integrated into MC11/12.

Maybe in the next version there should be a clear difference between zero stars and unrated ?...

Why this huge discussion on rated or unrated? Can't you people just give us, preferrably customizable graphical rating fields, or at least half star ratings?! More rating steps would solves this 2 things ;)
