Title: What is going on with the all

of the spam lately.

If you mean the forum spam, it's apparently a new "business".  I think someone in some third world country must be getting paid 10 cents each time they sign up for a forum account and post some trashy message.  We're not the only forum "benefitting" from this.  We're thinking about what to do.

I say we hire a squad of attack ninja monkeys (http://www.chucklee.com/Ctemp/NinjaMonkey_CL.jpg) and sick them on the spammers every time they appear!!

Of course, a simpler solution would be to have a 2 day "cooling off" period after new users sign up before they're allowed to post.  That has some customer service implications though since Interact is the primary support mechanism for MC.... That, and the monkeys would be a lot more fun.   ;D

That Would Only Hurt New Users To The Forum Who Needs Help.

I have Deleted About 100 Of These Messages Over The Past Few Months. I Also Looked Up The Handle On the Internet, And It Seems Many Of The Handles Have Been Around For Years Spamming Other Forums. Since Some Of The Handles Showed Up On The Forum Pages Dating Back To Like 2000 To 2001.

Yeah.... I know.  That's definitely the downside to that method, though on some of the forums I frequent that do have that policy it does seem to be somewhat effective.

And I believe they register one day, use the e-mail we send to activate many days later, and then post -- sleeper cells.

sleeper cells.

And that's what the ninja monkeys are for.   ;)

They'll sneak in, so they don't wake them while they're sleeping.

What about linking membership of the forum to downloading MC.  Presumeably spammers would not be bothered with a 12MB download, just to get access to the forum?

I like this idea. Would keep people out who have not tried MC.

Can Be Easily Terminated, also since they most likely have a T1 connection or higher a 10 second download is not going to hurt.

It maybe automated.

If the forum sent out a list of numbers in a image it would keep automated spammers out, but i am not sure if the forum already does this.

What about using a captcha on the sign on? I understand the newer ones are pretty difficult for an automated system.
