This could be a virus checker. MC is probably building thumbnails and, if a virus checker gets involved every time a file is opened, CPU usage will spike.

There is at least one other CPU usage problem in this thread:

I think you could be right Jim it could be the virus checker with a background task....
but it's been erratic all day so I'm gonna have to wait and see...
Thumbnails aren't actually building for me in .81 however so
not sure whats happening....
I wasn't having these problems in .55 which is about the build I left on.
I feel it would be really useful if we could pull up a window to see what MC is
doing in the background. It does quite alot of stuff now a days!
And also be able to tell it to stop doing what ever it's doing...

Some Directshow filters have problems. Check what glynor had to say on ffdshow versions.

It's not just video files, it's MP3's too.
Images appear to be ok though.
If i tell it to rebuild thumbnails it says it's sucessful in 0:00 time.

Actually it appears MC forgot most my MP3's files had cover art.
By doing a quick find they've reappeared again....and started rebuilding...
I'm making progress here. I told MC to erase all thumbnails and start again,
and now they seem to be building, video thumbs included. (No FFDShow changes)
It's a long slow process though. Wish they could be backed up...
