Title: JimH ... this might be of interest to you
Post by: RhinoBanga on June 10, 2003, 02:21:06 am
Jim (and Matt, Nikolay too),

I can appreciate how big MC is so when I found this I thought of you:

http://www.xoreax.com/main.htm

It's a distributed compiler for the PC.

I am evaluating it at my company and the initial results are very encouraging indeed.

With a small farm of 5 PC's I am seeing a 4:1 speed increase with no perceivable impact on the user's PC.

To put that in perspective I have a program here that takes 12 minutes to compile locally.   Using incredibuild it takes 3  :-*

The downside is the cost but the major upside is the gain in productivity.

Interesting.  Maybe if we get some free time we'll play with it.

Linking MC is what's killer.  Even with top-of-the-line PC's, it takes 20 - 30 seconds for every small change.

/me dreams of 30 seconds.

One of our applications (called Pace) takes 6 minutes on my P4 1.7ghz with 512mb ram to link.

I just installed a few more PC's into the farm and now building on average now takes 50s when it used to take 6 minutes :) :)

You should try the 30 day trial.

It took me 5 minutes to download and install.   It seamlessly integrates with MSDev/VS.NET and doesn't touch your source code in any way which is a big plus.

Trust me you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!
