Title: need a file unlocker?
Post by: marko on October 03, 2006, 05:05:11 am
tip for the day:

For as long as I can remember, I used a simple .dll called "wholockme?". You may be familiar with it, it's been around a long time.

I now use "Unlocker" http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ which is far more comprehensive, allowing, among other things, to kill the locking handle, without killing the locking process, which is nice.

I don't use its tray assistant, the context menu entry works just fine without it.

I can second that program. I used another unlocker but this one is much better.

Thanks for the link Marko.  I could have done with that last night when I ended up booting into Safe Mode to delete a stubborn file  >:(  :-\  :)

well it did not fix it (delete the files).

they are unused system files, but because of the name Windows XP will not allow them to be renamed or deleted.

Folder:

C:\ZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ClientSD

Files:

C:\ZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZ\edb.chk
C:\ZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZ\edb.log
C:\ZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZ\res1.log
C:\ZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZ\res2.log
C:\ZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ\ZZZZZZZZ\WinSS_st.edb

They maybe in use but not sure why.

Or how to move them to where they belong.

safe mode does not help.

one day soon (6 months or sooner) I will reformat and reinstall.

As far as I can tell, it seems most likely those files are part of OneCare. Perhaps try uninstalling/reinstalling it, stopping to check on the rogue files inbetween steps.

Do you have similar files at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\Database\"

If those "ZZZ's" are the literal file paths, and it were my system, I'd like to get to the bottom of it sooner rather than later, one way or another.

I was attempting to shread a bunch of folders that i moved to C:\Hold\ when I re-installed windows about 6 months ago.

It is causing no harm really

maybe i will turn off windows one care to see if i can remove the folders.

I'm also using OneCare and did a search on my C: drive for edb*.*

I found those files where Marko suggested, but not with the ZZZZ... filepaths.

It appears the files are used with Active Directory Services as discussed here"

Maybe the descriptions for the files can help you.
