Title: time out downloading update

For a few months now, I'm getting the update started atomatically, but always ending with "failed to connecting to a server". Is there another to (finally update) to MC 11.1.196 ?

You may have something blocking FTP.  Firewall?

The download page has an alternate link that uses HTTP.

I would check your firewall.  I don't know much about their settings, but I do know I had to dis-able my Norton Firewall to download MC11. After the download started, I could re-enable Norton.

With MC 12 I don't have to do anything.

You could, of course, just download the installer manually and upgrade by running it.  You can always find a link to download and install the most current build at the top of this forum (it's always a "stickied" thread at the top).  The current version is 11.1.200 and the thread is here:

Even though 11.1.196 is the current "stable" version, I've used the 11.1.200 build extensively and it's fine.  I'd just use it (I'm not sure why they haven't moved it to "stable" since it's been out for some time now).

The download problems are very likely either:

1) Firewall problems
2) IE security settings.  If these are set to High or something similar you may have problems using MC's internet related functions.
3) IE Proxy related stuff.  Funky proxy settings in IE can also cause trouble.

I've closed every possible firewall, put the levels of protection on internet explorer to nil, but still cannot get a download, nor from http, nor from ftp. Is the server down maybe?

No, I Just Downloaded 11.1.196

Edit: I Removed Log-On Info To My Server (Where I keep Versions Of Media Center)

You can upgrade Or test Out The 12 betas

MC12 Is Stable And Faster

There are something that have changed most for the good, some things are debatable

No Problem.

If you can download from me but not from j river something is wrong.

a good test would be if you had a Free ISP you could use other than what your using now (like a AOL free trial). if it works then it could be your current provider.

if your using a computer from work your Administrator could have some Sites Blocked.
