Title: Podcast Error - Advice Sought
Post by: Marc on October 08, 2006, 11:05:25 am
Hello,

I have MC configured to automatically download a podcast from a "former hometown" radio station:

     http://www.kfi640.com/podcast/BillHandel.xml

About a month ago, it stopped working and now I've been receiving the following error messages:

Quote
The podcast feed is not currently available, or contains a data format error.  Please notify the webmaster, or just check back later.

File too large, probably a media file

I download one other show from that station (http://www.kfiam640.com/podcast/JohnandKen.xml) that still works.

Is there a way to change the value that determines what "too large" means to Media Center so I can see if the file size has crested some artificial barrier?  I've also sent a note to the radio station's web master asking if anybody else has reported this issue.

Thanks for your help,

Marc

Well, it's a Media Center issue.  Why?  Because I've set up automatic podcast downloads on my wife's computer (an iMac running iTunes) and podcasts download automatically without issue.

Yes, the files are large...but not that large (10 to 30 MB in size).

I've installed Media Center v11 on my work laptop with the same results.  Anybody have any ideas?   ?

It's doubtful that file size is the problem.  Always possible there's something we don't know about.

Problems like these are often a date formatting error in the podcast feed.  It's fairly common that podcasters don't follow the standard for dates.

Double check your podcast settings.  There are some limits on total size there.

It's fairly common that podcasters don't follow any standards, or do so incorrectly.  They are mostly amateurs after all.  What about some fault tolerance in this area?

We've done that several times in the past.  It's a moving target.

Same problem here since today, I'm pretty sure the file size is the problem.
The Feed is : http://www.1001podcast.com/podcast/BFM/channel6/BFMchannel6.xml

I've downloaded the xml source it's size is 1007 kbytes,

To be sure I've edited this file, removed some items (only the oldest ones) and updated the two xml files on my website.

If I create a feed pointing to the url of the first one (1007 Kbytes) I get the same error message, the smaller one (995 kbytes) loads ok into a new feed.

You can get the two files here:

Thanks for the additional info.  I can confirm the problem.  We'll take a look.

The 1 MB cap was put in place because some Podcast Directories erroneously point to a media file instead of a Podcast Feed.

However, we'll bump the cap to 4 MB for tonight's build of MC 12. (now in beta)

If things work as expected, it may be rolled to v11 at a later date.

Thank you Matt & Jim!  I wish other s/w providers were as "on the ball" as you guys.

I just upgraded to MC 12.0.110.  Podcasting now works perfectly, where MC 11.1.201 still chokes.  I'm now on a version of MC that works perfectly - thanks for increasing the 1MB file size limitation in v.12.
