Title: documents deserve equal respect
Post by: rjm on October 10, 2006, 12:24:51 pm
In addition to using MC to organize music, video, and images, I also use MC to organize documents such as ebooks.

I would like an option to give document types equal status by being able to add a documents button to the top of the left pain, just like music, video, and images enjoy.

Better yet, also add an option for an "All" media type button. Viewing all media types is very useful when for example you have documents and images associated with a music album.

Documents are the Rodney Dangerfield of media types.

Documents are the Rodney Dangerfield of media types.

Documents are dead?

RJ, I'm fully with you on this.  Documents really do get (less) respect under 12.0.  And this was just when I thought MC was ready to start eating Copernic's lunch.

I should tell you, you are now the third person to say this among all the beta testers who have examined MC12.  Most of the others recoiled in horror at the sight of a "Documents" header sitting cheek-by-jowl with their precious "music", "images" and "video".

I just thought the Documents item looked too crammed when up next to the new Audio, Images, and Video "buttons" on the tree.

Of course, I liked it better when we had the fully vertical tree anyway so...

Though, I must say.  The new system has grown on me a bit, despite it's shortcomings.  My wife likes it a lot though (and you know who wins that battle).

Solution to avoid clutter is to make it an option.

In my case I would turn off Images and turn on Documents.

Except that would clutter options.  Maybe an option to make it optional.

My library has many albums that contain all four main media types.

- Music files
- Music videos
- Informational documents (e.g. in txt, doc, pdf, html or mht formats)
- Complete cover art & booklet scan sets and sometimes also other images, like press photos, live concert photos etc.

I liked the MC11.1 way to display the tree items (after I got my "All Media" view schemes to behave properly).

Would this optional option have user-configurable preferences?

It depends.

I think Jim is a very experienced business man. He gives his users some options, but always keeps control over some non-negotiable items, so that users hungry for options always come back to him  ;)

I am still previewing MC12, but it is looking like I probably won't upgrade because of this lack of control over some options. MC is a wicked app, but the inability to change some pieces is frustrating. For example, why can't licence owners change the start page to something more useful?
