Reported earlier:
I am using an Netgear MP101 in combination with uPnP server.
As off MC12 I get a runtime error when I start the MP101.
MC12 will be closed. After that I start MC12 again and reconnect from the still running MP101 and it works.
Different scenario:
MC12 is not running. I start the MP101. Off course it does does find a server to connect to. I start MC12. Then I reconnect to MC12 from the MP101 menu and it works.
So the error can only be reproduced by starting the MP101 when MC12 is already running.
I am also having a problem with Netgear MP101, no matter what combination of start up I try, either the MP101 or MC12 running first, the MP101 can see the MC12 but won't connect to it at all, flat out refuses, if I then fire up MC11.1, on it's own of course not alongside MC12, the MP101 connects straight away....Both MC11.1 and MC12 upnp's are set up the same way exactly, same settings, using the same port, everything the same and it's over the same network...
Incidentally, I just checked MC11.1 is running upnp version 1.0.37 but MC12 is running version 1.0.36...would this have anything to do with it?
Thanks for your help

Hi Guys
I originally posted this, or rather added to the MC12 thread around this post but I though it should have a new topic as there are probably a few people who depend on MC's upnp server like I do, anyway, if there's any update about this I woul dappreciate it.
Thanks

Anybody want to give this a go or what, I've already purchased the upgrade and I realise this is still beta software but I'd at least like to know that it's being looked into as I use this feature a lot.....
-
I'm checking it...
j
-
Hi John
Thanks for that, at least I know it's being looked at, I appreciate this.
-
Yep,
that's good news.
It is so quiet in my kitchen in the morning now ....
;)
Peter
PS. I am happy to send logging or other info if needed.
-
goodog - I'm not seeing this. Do you have the NetGear selected in the options?
DutchPeter - I'm not getting a crash - my NetGear starts and runs no matter what the order.
Can you turn on logging and send me the log?
Thanks,
j
-
Hi John
Will do, I'll send this in later tonight.
Thanks again for your help
-
Hi John
Log file from tonight as requested. No change from my end, the MP101 sees the MC12 and starts to connect but fails and then tries again and fails and then asks to be set up...and so on.
Thanks again for you help and hopefully this will tell you something, it suddenly occured to me that it might be firewall related but I just checked and alls okay there.
erm....sorry about this but I don't see how to attach a file and the log is fairly long ?.....can you suggest something please.
Best Regards
Goodog

email the log file to gateley @ jriver.com
thanks,
j
-
John,
I e-mailed my log
Peter

Hi John
I'll e mail my log file to you later, I'm in work just now, thanks for the advice.

-
Dutch Peter - I didn't receive a log file, send again please...
j
-
I have sent it again.
Peter
-
John, did you receive my mail??
-
No, I didn't. Are you sending it as an attachment? What kind of attachment?
j
-
It is a txt attachment, created in the Logging dialog of MC12.
Do you have another mail address? Maybe it is stopped by my provider?
You can leave it in a personal message.
Peter
-
Strange. Send me a test message with no attachement...
j
-
I changed the header of the mail pasted the log into the message as text.
??
-
Okay, very strange. I'm not seeing ANYTHING.
Try just a short test message, and send it to the jriver account I gave above, and also
John.Gateley @ gmail.com
j
-
It's out there ........
-
Thanks, there's some mailer weirdness going on. I'm checking into it. In the meantime, you can mail the log to the gmail account.
Thanks,
j
-
It's on it's way.
-
Hi John
I just sent my log file to both the accounts you gave. I hope it helps.
Best Regards

MC12.0.91 (nothing mentioned about fixing uPnP problems)
It's a miracle.
I just tried to crash and it does not!!!
Did you change anyting?
I will be testing it in the coming days.
If it crashes I will send the log.
Thnx,
Peter
-
No miracles!!!
It just crashed.
Sent log to John on gmail.

Hey John
I just wondered how things were going. I have updated to the latest version of MC12 which I notice has the same upnp server version as MC11.1 but it didn't make a difference as far as the issue goes........bizarre as, when I switch to MC11.1 it connects without a problem....straight though, as it were....Anyway, I just wanted to add the update for you.
-
I'm still having trouble playing music with my Netgear MP101 boxes. It crashes after a few button pushes and is very annoying. If I change tracks, it usually crashes. Most actions cause MC to just instantly close on my server.
-
Hey John
Any progress....or not......something..
-
Yes, I've found one of the problems (crashing), I'm working on fixing it...

It looks like the errors with my NOXON device could have the same reason.
I just want to mention here that it would be a temporary workaround if MC12 could restart immediately after a crash (like windows can do!).
Usually, after a restart MC remains stable for some time. The crashes not only occur after playing around with the NOXON. Ocassionally, MC crashes without manual interactions during playing a view scheme tree.
-
Bumping this thread...any progress guys, or not.... ?
-
We're getting closer. Hopefully we'll have a fix soon.
-
I'm available for testing this if you wish prior to releasing it in a build. I have an MP101 in my son's room and another out by the pool. I could always use an excuse to go for a swim one of these evenings after work ;D
-
I have four MP101s and have some strange outcomes as well. Lately, the problem has been that the songs stop playing before they are over or they play longer than the song is with silence. I bet the library files got messed up since duration is a separate file. I'll try making a new library.
I would highly recommend checking that you have the latest version of the MP101's firmware. That makes a huge difference in many cases!
-
For the MP101 client that is 1.3.7 if I am not mistaking.
-
I feel sometimes like the MP101's just didn't have the most robust software period. I have trouble getting an IP address quite often and I'm running Smoothwall which is about the most stable router you can imagine. The box I most care about is the one in my bathroom but this one is on wireless unlike my other 3 and this creates additional trouble as I said with getting an IP or even connecting wirelessly at all. It shouldn't have a lot of trouble with range since they aren't too far apart but who knows.
-
I just checked MC 12.0.100 and it has UPnP version 1.0.37. Was this added earlier or did you just fix it? I see something about UPnP in the history. I'll see how it works for me.
Addition: It works and connects instantly. I hope it keeps working like this. I think the version change (back to the most recent) definitely helped.
-
Sorry y'all, forgot to bump the version. 12.0.100 should fix the MP101 problems (actually, they are not specific to the MP101) some are having.

Hi John
Thanks for the reply, I'll download the latest version and try it out when I get home and let you know how it pans out.
Cheers

Have tested some things. It still works!!!
Seems faster than before in MC11.1?!
-
Hi John
It works!! Thanks for all you rhelp with this, it was really important to me and I had already committed to MC12.
It's all good now, thanks again

The latest (106) seems to have destroyed the library server and the upnp server. Neither worked for me and I had to revert to an older version...I think I'm currently using 103.
-
For me it works for most of the cases.
I have problems with playing views with 2 or more levels like Albums per Artist.
It will play only the first song.
I will have to do some more experimeting, and will report back.
-
Ok.
here an example where it goes wrong.
Let's say I want play the album 'Anouk is alive' by Anouk through my MP101 uPnP player. Here is a picture of the view:
Through the MP101 interface I can scroll to the album. When I push the play button, it only plays 1 song instead of the whole album.
Other 'multiple layer views' work. I think the difference is that those do not have albums in it.
This is how this view is build up:
Album Artist
Album
Album Release Year (= Comments Field rename by me)
Song
Is 'Album Release Year' bothering uPnP?
-
After removing the 4th pane (Song in this case) it works.
Small bug, but not a big problem.
-
I don't even use customized views like that. I mainly use playlists--pretty much my 5 star playlist. I start up the player and immediately go to Playlists > Ben > 5 Star and push Play.
It usually starts after a delay and plays 2-3 songs flawlessly. However, on the 4th or so, it starts playing only :30 or less of each song and then going to the next song. Also, switching songs often makes MC crash on my server in the basement (what the upnp server is running on) and once that happens, no more music until I remember to start MC again. I'm thinking of making a scheduled task start MC every 15 minutes b/c if it's running, starting it won't do anything. This way it will be running most of the time.
I'm not sure what it is that's making the upnp crash MC but I also should point out that when I upgraded to the latest version (107 I think), the upnp server wouldn't let my mp101 connect at all after numerous attempts. The library server also broke. I reverted to an older version and now only have the crashing problem.
-
I have far less problems. At the moment MC never crashes anymore.
Sometimes streams stop and I have to restart again.
Also sometimes songs are cut of and the next is started.
Problem is that I can not reproduce it. Therefore I never mentioned it.
John G asked me to use the tool from http://www.ethereal.com/ to give more input on the problem we had before. Maybe that is something you can use to provide more input.
-
Ok.

Album
Album Release Year (= Comments Field rename by me)
Song
Is 'Album Release Year' bothering uPnP?
It's actually "Song" (I'm assuming you mean "Name"), and it's doing what it should, though it may be counter intuitive.
Take Song out of the view scheme, try again, and see if you get more reasonable behavior.
j
-
After removing the 4th pane (Song in this case) it works.
Small bug, but not a big problem.
John,
I already did take Song (= rename of Name) out and it works.
I do not understand why that is what it should do.
I select an album (on the second level of the view) and it plays 1 mp3 instead of all the mp3's of the album.
Where is my intuition different from yours??
-
If you have a view with Artist then Album, and you "play" an album, the device does a query for the direct children of the album which are media files.
If you have a view Artist, Album, Song and you "play" an album, the device does a query for the direct children of the album which are themselves containers. It does not go down one further level to find the media file inside the song container.
j
-
Ok ... but
in my case I have Comments after Artist, Album.
Comments holds the same value for 1 album: for example '2006'.
Shouldn't it play all the songs in that case, if Name is after Comments?
-
No, it doesn't.
When you get the children of the "2006" comment container, it returns several song containers. Each of these song containers contains a single child, a song (the actual data).
When you play the 2006 container, it asks for the children, sees the children are containers and not audio data, and cannot play it.
If you took out the song entry in the view scheme, then it would work as you expect.
j
-
I understand what you are saying, but I am playing one of the album containers belonging to an artist, not the comments container.
Shouldn't that play all the year containers?
