Title: BartMan01: iPod Detection
Post by: BartMan01 on October 29, 2006, 10:38:23 am
Been having this issue for the last several builds but just figured out how to consistently reproduce:

iPod shows up twice in handheld list with the same drive letter.  First item in list has the options set, second item acts like a 'new' handheld.  Windows just sees it as a single drive/device.

To reproduce:
Connect iPod.
Click Eject Button and wait for 'Do Not Disconnect' message to go away on device.
Disconnect iPod from machine and then reconnect.

I'm not able to reproduce this.

What iPod type are you using?  Is it firewire or USB?  What OS are you on?

Are you saying two iPods appear in the tree at the same time, or that on reconnect the settings are different?

60GB iPod Photo over USB (I also have a fireware cable and port, but just use that with the car charger).
Running XP SP2.

It is not happening 100% of the time - this time it took two eject/disconnect/re-connect to cause it.  It may be related to how quickly it is disconnected/reconnected.  I do wait for the 'Do not disconnect' message to go away before I disconnect and for Windows to make the disconnect sound before I reconnect.  And yes, I do occasionally realize that I forgot to delete some old podcasts or tweak a play list right as I hit 'eject' so I am reconnecting immediately on purpose.

Re-connect:

(top device is the configured one, bottom device is the 'new' one and that is what defaults to the action window)

To make sure I understand, the iPod doesn't disappear from MC after you press the "Eject" button?

No, the iPod completely goes away when ejected (from MC and Windows).  Then comes back as two items for MC but just one for Windows.  Then continues to come back as two items on every reconnect until I do the following:

Eject the top iPod entry.
Close MC.
Re-open MC.
Re-attach iPod.

If I close MC with the 2 iPods showing, they both show up again the next time MC detects the device.

Still having the issue, but now is even weirder.

If the iPod starts as just one device, when left connected it eventually becomes two devices.  Have reset the iPod with Apple's software, and reinitialized it in MC.  Still happens.  Any suggestions on how I can fix this for good?

And to make it even weirder - left system running, and it magically went back to one.  Seems the 'second' ipod comes and goes as it pleases in MC.

This was supposed to be fixed very recently (in build 12.0.118) so make sure you're running the latest beta. If you are and it's still happening let us know and we'll start digging again.

Still 'dynamically' intermittent with 120.  The duplicate entry was there when I first plugged the iPod in, and then (after sitting plugged in with MC running for about 1/2 hour) it is gone.  Then after sitting for a while, the duplicate is back again.

FYI - still happening with .130 too

More details from my latest observations:

Yesterday, I manually cleared out all of the MC registry entries for handhelds (to make sure there wasn't some ghost record hanging around).
I attached the iPod - came up as 2 devices.
Ran 'redetect all devices' - stayed 2 devices.
Ejected, reconnected.  Showed up as 2 devices then one of them disappeared.
Renamed the single device showing to 'Bart's iPod Photo'.

Now today:
I hook up the iPod.
Shows up as TWO 'Apple iPod Photo' devices.
A few seconds later both disappear and 'Bart's iPod Photo' appears.
After sitting plugged in for a while I now have in the device list:
'Apple iPod Photo (F:)'
'Bart's iPod Photo (F:)'

Registry keys in MC for this single device:
$$?$storage#removablemedia#7&1b55613e&0&rm#{53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}
$$?$storage#removablemedia#7&1b55613e&0&rm#{53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}$0
$$?$usbstor#disk&ven_apple&prod_ipod&rev_1.62#000a2700144c6417&0#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}

The second key is the configured iPod.

Also, if it makes a difference - i do NOT have the iPod connected directly to the computer.  It is connected to a USB port on my Dell monitor - so essentially it is connecting through a USB hub.

More info - it is still randomly intermittent.
At this moment it just shows as the one device ('Bart's iPod Photo').  Machine has been constantly running with MC open and the iPod attached since two posts up.

Still having issues with this in .147 but now it is even worse:

If I sync my iPod when the duplicate is there - the sync 'works' in MC (as in it actively transfers the files), and a re-check shows 'device is fully synchronized'.  However, when I eject the iPod it does not drop from the tree and the changes do not actually show up on the iPod.  Sync only works properly now if only the 'correct' device is showing up on the tree.

This may be related, not sure-
5.5g Ipod Video (80gb). When syncing a playlist, and selecting to delete anything that isn't on the playlist, the Ipod appears to randomly loose everything that's on the device (From the menu's only). As far as I can see, the files that are supposed to be there still are, and the ones that aren't have been deleted. Makes me wonder if there's something somewhere in Apple's code that JR haven't figured out yet- The previous 4th Gen worked nicely, so it seems to only be the videos that have problems, so you testing with an older Ipod could possibly confirm/ deny this?
I also note that even though I changed the name, it still reverts back to Apple Ipod Video, but I'm not really bothered on this score.

Update - issue still here in .157

Any additional feedback from JRiver on why it either sees this as two devices either on connect on on re-scan by MC?
