Title: OT - please help if you can

With more and more older songs becoming available to buy.  I have one I would love to find but at the moment it is hopeless.  It's from the 60's, I neither remember the title or artist (know it was male).

The song is a real tear jerker.  My 3rd grade teacher played it for us a few times.  It deals with a guy who has a dog he loves.  He goes to Vietnam and when he comes back he finds out the dog had died.

I wish I could.  Then I could do a lyric search.  Trying to search on the concept brings so many matches, because of Vietnam and died.
