Microsoft may have used old MP3 encoders in their comparison against the new WMA encoder. At least, that's what someone reports in a thread on hydrogenaudio.

Cant confirm it but I believe it.
Probably used Xing or some other bad encoder to make themselves seem awesome as per usual.

they used Xing @ 20 Kbps but also used lame 3.83 and that's old
