Title: Discussion: Find/Replace vs. Move/Copy Folder!
Post by: Jaguu on December 07, 2006, 06:06:14 am
Yesterday I moved my complete image collection (30'000 files) from one drive to another (from D: to M:), which was quite a quick and easy to do .

Before I did the whole transfer with Find/Replace I tested the move/copy to folder feature with a few files as I haven't used this feature for years. I found out that it does the same ugly thing as it did a few years ago, just copy/moving all files to a single folder and not recreating the subfolder structure, which for me was quite useless.

As most library reorg can be done with Find/Replace and Rename files form properties I am wondering what's the effective use of this feature? So I am asking, if

a. anybody uses this feature at all and if yes, for what purpose?
b. this is could be a redundant feature with no effective value
c. may better be dropped as it may confuse many new and old users.

What is your opinion or experience with the Move/Copy folder feature?

I always use "move to" for integrating new files into my library.

When I rip CDs, download podcasts, copy pictures from my camera or record TV, I have seperated folders for each CD, each Podcast, each Picture Set, each TV-Event to have them roughly organized for the beginning. If I have lot of time, I start to import the files folder by folder into my library and do some tagging.

The last step I do is moving the files into their folders. I move ALL my audios (from different HDs and folders) to one folder. So I'm happy with the move/copy feature.

For my pictures I'll use find/replace from now. Didn't know that it works as you described...

i use it to copy groups of images (that may be in all sorts of places in directory structure) to one single directory so i can work on them in that directory. i'd say it was useful. i don't use move tho at all.

I also use it in the same manner as described by prod. Saves me a lot of time and clicks.

I use Move to move files from my "New" disk to my main media volume's "Incoming" folder.  After which I do a Rename Files From Properties.

I would really prefer that Gamer's idea be implemented though... (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=31662.0)
