Hello!
Is it normal that MC (11.1.200) uses 140 MB of memory and 175 MB of virtual memory when it's playing a MP3 and with no visualizations?
The weird is that use of memory constantly and suddenly changes from 5-15 MB to 140MB while the VM stays in about 175 MB.
This amount of memory used by MC upsets me because I work in a laptop (with 1 GB) using "fat" software like Visual Studio and I have difficulty in sparing more than 300 MB just for listening to music...
Best regards,
Henrique

Mine uses 40MB of memory. The 175 virtual may mean you don't have enough memory in your system. Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.
Are you using any third party plug-ins?

First of all many thanks for your quick reply!
Answering to your question, no I don't have any additional plugins.
Now I've noticed that even when the playback is paused MC continues to shift suddenly between 5 and 140 MB of memory use (plus the 175MB of VM).
Here goes my system info:

Let it run a while. It may be building thumbnails. I can't think what else could be a problem.
Try killing some of your other programs (as a test). With a GB of memory, you must be running a lot in the background to have only 187MB left.

Exactly what I was thinking. That system has some issues!
You might want to grab a copy of this program here (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html) and this program here (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html) and give it a good scan.

No...my system does not have any "issues" (I have an AV, anti-*are, firewall, and so on), I'm just working and I need to have many programs running...
I've just uninstalled MC 11.1.200 and installed 11.1.183 and now the memory use is 13 MB + 64 MB of VM.
The system info is:
Media Center Registered 11.1.183 -- C:\Programas\J River\Media Center 11\
Microsoft Windows XP Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Intel Unknown 1661 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 1039 MB, Free - 311 MB
I would give MC 11.1.201 a try but I can't download it...

It's here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter111201.exe
or here:

Installing build 200 again would probably also work.
Experiment with other programs NOT running for a while (just as a test).
Are all of your files and your library on the local drive? Or are some on a network or USB drive?

Fair enough...
Still. I too am working, and I have Adobe Photoshop CS2 open with three 12.7 MP photos currently loaded, AutoMKV compressing a video file, Process Explorer running, and Firefox 2.0 open (with about 4 tabs open), and I still have 219MB of physical memory free on this system. That's why I was suspicious that something else was going on...
Of course, I'm using MC12 which is quite a bit "lighter".

MC 11.1.201 installed...memory consumption is OK (10MB + 60MB).
I guess something happened to my previous installation of MC (the 11.1.200).
JimH all my library files are local, and the next time i'll restart the system i'll try running MC without any other programs. Thanks.
glynor you said MC 12 is lighter? That sounds very interesting... ;) I must give it a try.
And also my thanks to you for your help!
