This is way off topic but I'm sure I've come to the right place...
We are hosting a going away party this weekend for some close friends of ours that are moving to Texas and I'm trying to put together a playlist of decent songs about Texas, cowboys or Houston.
I have searched for song titles containing those keywords and have put together a start but what I can't find easily are decent songs that contain those keywords in the lyrics.
By decent songs I guess that means songs should have made the top 50 or so of some charts preferably rock, pop, or country and the funnier the better.
I just need Track/Artist names, I'm not looking for files.
Here's what I have so far...
"Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" - Elton John
"Wanted Dead Or Alive" - Bon Jovi
"Texas Flood" - Stevie Ray Vaughan
"Texas Ride Song" - BoDeans
"Texas" - Charlie Daniels
"Texas" - Willie Nelson
"Texas Women" - Hank Williams, Jr.
"Texas Moaner Blues" - Louis Armstrong
"Cowboy Hat" - Nickleback
"Cowboy Love" - Reverend Horton Heat
"Cowboy Song" - Thin Lizzy
"Cowboy" - Kid Rock Tribute Band
"Texas" - Chris Rea
"All My Ex's Live In Texas" - George Strait
"Sweet Jane" - Cowboy Junkies
"Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" - Waylon Jennings
"Last Dance Rodeo" - Jewel

Thanks a ton,
Rick

Not really directly about texas, but it is quite funny and mentions (of course) Austin...
What would Willie do? - Bruce Robison
-
ZZTop - La Grange (anything by ZZTop, actually)
Boys Don't Cry - I want to be a cowboy
-
Alabama - If You're Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band)
-
Of course Gateley mentioned the definitive Texas song, IMO, the tender love ballad, "La Grange". Apart from that truly iconic song, I would recommend the master of the West Texas two-step, Mr. Ponty Bone. A word of warning: this is accordion music.
-
Ted Taylor - Houston Town (The lyrics repeat all over "Get Me Out of Houston Town")
Hank Williams, Jr. - Houston, We Have a Problem
Ry Cooder - Houston in Two Seconds
Dean Martin - Houston
Doug Sahm - Houston Chicks
Laurie Anderson - The Night Flight From Houston
Lightnin' Hopkins - Houston Rock
Lightnin' Hopkins - Rainy Day in Houston
Steve Earle - Home To Houston
Wilson Philips - Fueled for Houston
ZZ Top - Heaven, Hell or Houston
-
Living in Houston, I'm shocked that nobody mentioned the song that's a classic: Deep In The Heart of Texas. Gene Autry may be best known for his version.
FYI, when Trans-Siberian Orchestra comes every year, they have fun with us. They simply clap out the rhythm and the whole audience immediately knows to sing out "Deep in the Heart of Texas".

The stars at night
Are big and bright
Deep in the heart of Texas
My mama used to sing that song to me when I was rockin in a cradle in Houston. I think it's the first song I knew.

"Blind in Texas" - W.A.S.P.
"Cowboys from Hell" - Pantera

"Texas Cowboys" by The Grid
"The Bluest Eyes in Texas" by Nina Persson and Nathan Larson

Frankie Laine with some "old school" campy cowboy classics, such as Blazing Saddles and Wanted Man. Great stuff!
-
Just go buy the album Texas Funeral by Jon Wayne (http://www.amazon.com/Texas-Funeral-Jon-Wayne/dp/B00000206K).
