Any third party plug-ins?  Virus checker?  Etc.

Disabling a virus checker may not be enough.  Can you try uninstalling it?

Are the files local?  Or on a network drive?

Craft--

Are you talking about Doof's Lyrics Editor plugin?  It's a great plugin and I use it also, but it was accounting for an extra 30 seconds on startup.  So I now default to hiding it under the plugin manager, and only enable it when I'm going to use it.

I never think of this, because with Windows XP it's so easy to schedule a task to automatically defrag your drives.  Check out this Microsoft support page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555098

You can of course set up different schedules for different days for the different drives on your system, and have them run overnight.

I have mine set up to run the defrag once every 2 weeks on my frequently modified drives (such as my drive N where all my "new" media goes, and my T drive which is my TV-recording drive), and once per month on my more stable drives.  I never really have fragmenting problems anymore!

Which Hard disk did you defragment? The one with the operating system or the external drive or both? Because I am having the same problem.
