Dear All,
I have downloaded 12 beta, and not sure if the problem I have with YADB lookup is related or not, but:
1) I still use 11.1.200 in parallel (registered) in which the YADB lookup worked fine until recently, but has now also stopped working
2) Upgraded my Internet explorer from 6 to 7 *automatic ms update *
Not sure if 2 relates to the problems, but it's pretty much the same time.
Basically I don't get album details anymore when ripping CD's (eventhough they are very common ones), and (as suggested in the various topics) lookup tracks by right clicking on an album results in nothing as well (eventhough the original data comes from YADB).
Is there anyway one can see what MC does when communicating with YADB (logfile, testtool etc). Or can you check settings
Any help greatly appreciated.

YADB is up. Please note the time, and your IP address. If you don't know the time, the number of tracks and the length of the first 4 or 5 will do.
Post the info here and I'll see if you are connecting.
Also look into a firewall or similar situation on your end.

Hi John,
I feel like a prat, it all works now...Not sure if it was me or the weather. (in my defence I have been using MC for 4+ years and have ripped my entire CD collection with it, so I know something went funny but alas)
Thanks for your reply and time.

We were down for a while last weekend, maybe it was then?
If it happens again, just note the details and post here.

John,
yesterday evening, March 06, 2007, your YADB didn't work... today March 07, 2007, 06:30 ff CST, it doesn't work either.
No updates accepted, no CD tag downloads possible... even with such a famous album like "Innuendo" from Queen... ?
Is your YADB server down?
Just as a suggestion: wouldn't it be possible to create a sticky post on this forum where you post longer downtimes of your YADB server(s)?
Thanks
-
The server went down at 2am this morning, I'm not sure why, but I think it is because of a maintenance routine I was running overnight.
The degradation was gradual, so it could have caused a lookup failure for you last evening. Sorry for the trouble.

John,
the server is again down today, Wednesday, March 7th, 2007 at 4pm CST...

The server is up. I'm showing no accesses from you since 2pm this afternoon, and a successful lookup and submission from other users in the past minute.
Please give more details on what is happening.
j

John,
here are the details:
I wanted to start ripping at 4:07pm CST and put a CD "Queen: A Night At The Opera" (pretty common stuff) into the CD drive. The YADB lookup came back with "unknown album" and so on - pretty strange. I can understand why for instance "Kevin Johnson" (an Australian singer) is unknown to YADB and I added those including a lot of album front pictures and such. But at least it should show up on your logs as an attempt to get the track tags and album data from YADB. Strange, that it didn't.
Anyway, I don't want to create more work for you. I just assumed your server was down again.
It would be just nice to look into the hang problem related to an unsuccessful lookup on YADB please. Thanks!
And not to forget: Keep up the great work! We all appreciate what you guys do! Really best Media Center program around...

Hi Martin,
I was looking up based on the IP address you posted from, and since I found a lookup from that back at 2pm, I thought it was a fixed IP address and all your lookups would be under it. However, your next post was from a different IP and so it isn't fixed like I thought.
The first two tracks from "A Night At The Opera" have distinctive lengths: 223 seconds and 67 seconds.
I can't find any lookups from 4pm through 4:11pm for lengths close to that.
Could you stick the disc back in and look at the lengths of the first two tracks (and post them here)?
Thanks,
j
-
Oh yes... someone's looking at the cover art issue.
j
-
John,
the first track has 3:43 = 223 seconds
the second track has 1:07 = 67 seconds
hope that helps
was not at my desk, sorry
I suppose that there is a little problem around... but I just don't know if it's my satellite connection or what it is... and yes, I'm behind a NAT
Oh, and I'm in the Central Standard Time time zone... ;)

It really didn't connect - I can't find it in the logs.
Could you try again? Also note the number of tracks (helps me reduce the number of lines to look through).
Thanks
j
-
John,
14 tracks - I tried again - nothing
Several days it worked fine, then yesterday it started to stall... If you have any question please ask
Thanks,
Martin
PS: I'll restart my computer now and try it again (7:12 pm CST)
-
tried again, now 7:18 pm, to no avail...
sorry
-
It's really not connecting - I have no query for 14 tracks that is close to the track lengths above, nor any queries of 223 seconds followed by 60~80 seconds.
Are you right clicking on the drive and choosing "Update from YADB" or "Update from Online Database"?
And see the "Connecting to YADB" message box?
Thanks,
j
-
John,
yes, I see the "connecting to YADB" message box.
I wanted to rip the next batch of CDs this morning. I put in "Chris Rea" - "Road To Hell" at 5:15 am and got the message box and the result is the same: nothing... unknown!
I assume it's something on the program and/or the YADB database. Because everything else in connection with the Internet works just fine. I switched off cover art lookup and download because I don't want to crash my MC12. I hope I can switch it on again soon, it's more than a bit of a work to get the cover art from somewhere else manually.
By the way: yesterday evening two Queen albums and seven Eros Ramazzotti albums worked fine, although at the end of the ripping process the album data could not be transmitted (or added to the YADB). A bit annoying in the new version 12.0.184 is that the program seems to wait with the lookup and update until you switch manually into the ripping display section. In version 12.0.164 it did all that while you were doing something else which was more convenient. Can I go back to 12.0.164 (I still have it)? Do I have to uninstall 12.0.184 or can I just install over it?
Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,
First - sorry, the server was down again this morning from 2am til 7am. I had added a lot of data on tuesday, and that was interacting in a bad way with the daily maintenance cleanup (that happens to run at 2am). It is now fixed and won't happen again. So that explains Chris Rea.
Did the Queen album Night at the Opera lookup okay?
Could you explain more about what's happening with 12.0.184? A series of steps that I could reproduce here.
Thanks,
j
-
John,
ok, I try to explain:
in 12.0.184:
you put in a CD while you are working in another section of the program (not ripping, for instance tagging something else)
the program waits with detecting the CD and looking up the track data on YADB until you switch to the ripping view
the same wait state happens if you are working in another section while ripping in the background
the track data will be sent to YADB as soon as you pull up the ripping view
if the track data is not updated on YADB you get a message box where you have to click "OK"... not necessary
in 12.0.164:
you put in a CD while you are working in another section...
the program detects the CD instantaneously (gives you the message boxes over the view you are in)
no wait state happens if you are working in another section while ripping in the background
track data and cover art lookup on YADB happens without leaving the actual work area, you can change the CD etc. etc.
if the track data is not updated on YADB you get no message box...
It's a much easier workflow in version 164. You can finish up what you are actually doing without the need to interrupt it.
Thanks,
Martin

Running 12.0.185:
1) I began editing an Artist field in my audio collection
2) I put a CD in the drive.
3) The box popped up.
4) I clicked "Rip now".
5) It looked up the CD right away and began ripping.
How is it different for you? Which step is different?
j
-
my installation does it like that:
1. I edit something in tags of another album
2. I put in a CD
3. nothing happens
4. I click on the CD drive or on Tools/rip or on Rip CD
5. now the CD is recognized, looked up in YADB
6. I click rip
7. I change back to tags editing
8. if the CD rip is over it waits until I change back into the rip view
9. now the CD track data will be transferred to YADB (almost always with a message telling me that it couldn't be sent, asking for an "ok")
10. I click ok
11. the CD drive opens...
sounds pretty strange, doesn't it?
Well, probably it's because I just installed 12.0.184 directly over 12.0.164 two days ago... ?
-
John,
forgot me?
Don't want to be pushy, just want to resolve the problem...
Thanks,
Martin
-
No, I didn't forget. I'm talking with John T about this...
j
-
well, today it works again (most of it), but still:
- no cover art lookup on YADB without hang (had to switch it off)
- no track data can be updated on YADB (always error message box)
version 12.0.184
-
Are you talking about the individual track data (as opposed to CD data)?
What time and what track, I'll take a look to see what is going on.
j
-
John,
I talk about the normal CD data transfer to your database. Not one has been transferred although there are several albums you obviously didn't have on your database. Something seems to be wrong with 12.0.184 in this YADB connections. In 12.0.164 it works. It seems like you would have re-written a part of that YADB connection in the meantime (between 12.0.164 and 12.0.184) and something escaped your attention. As I don't know your program I cannot give you more hints, sorry. But it seems to be a bug.
Thanks,
Martin

Try it, and note the time. I'll take a look. I've been working on YADB a lot recently, and may have affected something, but one of the things I was working on was a tester that makes sure the server (including CD addition) is up.

Hi globetrotters1,
I haven't been able to reproduce the problem here. Can you send a debugging log after this occurs?
Go to Help/Logging and enable "output to a log file", make sure the "CD" option is checked. Now replicate the problem you're having. Then send the log file.
Thanks,
Johnt @ jriver.com
-
John,
I'll do that.
But I also wanted to tell you something else. In 12.0.164 there was no error message with stop when the CD data could not be updated on the YADB database. Today there is that darn stop, you have to hit <ENTER> then the CD will be ejected. Makes life much harder when ripping a lot of CDs. Could you just eliminate this error message please? Would be great. Thanks
All the best
Martin

Hi Martin,
John T isn't me... he gets the logs.
If you'll try one of those CDs that won't upload and post the time here, I'll take a look and fix the dialog at the same time...

John,
CD Shirley Bassey - The Singles - 1988
Time "6:53 am" CST
Message Box:
Action: "Failed"
Status: "unable to add to database"
(like 200 CDs before :) )
Take care,
Martin
