Title: OT: For your Christmas entertainment
Post by: modelmaker on December 23, 2006, 02:15:27 pm
Merry Christmas!

As some of you know, I build models for a living (mostly train related), and this being Christmas and some of you may have memories of trains running around the tree, I thought I'd share a site to show what some of the people in the model train hobby are up to:

http://magnoliaroute.com/magnolia%20route.htm (http://magnoliaroute.com/magnolia%20route.htm) enter site and goto the Video Library

The advancements in computer technology have been quite exciting for the model train hobby, trains now have complete independent digital control with built-in sound even in the smallest scales (using downloadable wav and mp3 files of actual locomotives)

Unbelievable!  Thanks for sharing it.

Did you make some of the models?

Very nice work!  I used to build plastic models but gave up after building seriously for about 10 years. I wanted to eventually build a replica of the batcave from the TV show and even had (still probably have) all the photos/diagrams/etc. necessary but just don't have the scratchbuild expertise. I love seeing the work from people like the one you shared that do have that talent!

Sorry, I didn't do any work on that one, I just wanted to show the "state of the art" of today.

Here's a custom unit I did recently:

I split my work between private clients and a professional layout building service, Dunham Studios. I am sort of the jack of all trades there, doing model building, electrical, scenery, etc. Some of that work can be seen here:

If anyone is going to be in NYC over the holidays, check out our 750 sq. ft. display layout (The Station at Citigroup Center) in the atrium of the citibank building.

In Cincinnati you can see our largest effort, Cincinnati In Motion, at the Union Terminal. It's 7000 sq.ft. and cost a whopping 1.3 mil $ and took 2 years to build.
