This is an Apple issue. The file MUST be in AAC 'm4b' format for the iPod to see it as an 'Audiobook'. If you want your Audiobooks to show as such on the iPod you have to rip them (or convert them) with iTunes.

One other "option" is that I have been listening to some audiobook podcasts. Yeah, it's listed as a podcast, but they are MP3's and the iPod does remember where you last listened to it. I just create playlists for the different audiobook podcasts and sync those.

in short
1) merge the "mp3 file audiobooks" (optional)
2) convert the mp3 file/files with Itunes to m4a files
3) rename file/files from m4a to m4b
4) import to ipod
then they will show up under audiobooks and have "bookmarks"
