Title: Why MC12 will now be using WM11
Post by: JimH on January 18, 2007, 06:04:29 pm
Another year, another version of Windows Media.  We're about to switch to Windows Media 11 in Media Center 12.  This isn't Windows Media Player 11.  It's the technology we need to support Vista.

We'll provide more info here soon.  Here's a thread on the last switch.

Why MC11 uses WM10 (not Windows Media Player 10) now:

Yes, we have to do it.  No, we don't like it either.

A reboot will be required once it is installed.

The next build that you'll see here will have this included.

What if you never play any form of Windows Media files?
Will the MC12 install complete sucessfully if installed while there is no internet connection available?

Well here's the question.  Does this mean that Windows Media Player 11 will be installed or will MC just install its codec support?  Doesn't Microsoft update the codec every other version?  So up until now, we've been using WMV 9.  Did they update it to WMV11?  I never use WMP and really don't need/want it updated or messed with.  It's just another chance for my file associations to be messed with.  If MC installs it and I don't ever see system changes or other dialogs, then I don't care.  I just hope that MC's install doesn't bring up WMP dialogs

Addition: I just read the link and see that it is not WMP.

I may not like it, but I still like you.   ;)

Thanks for the head's up.

If I already have windows media player 11 installed, do I still need to reboot?

I don't like it, but for me it doesn't matter because I have system restore turned off on all my computers (at it's best it makes a slight mess of your system - at it's worst it makes it a lot worse, so I rely on full image backups instead), and if you have system restore turned off, you get a question box from the WM installation and can cancel the install! ;) As for Vista I ran it for a couple of months but got sick and tired of the thing that's gonna be the buzzword in 2007: WWW. No, not World Wide Web. I mean World Wide Wait!  >:( Even with a rather sharp computer, like the laptop I ran it on, some things are horribly slow, and others are just downright annoying. I want to decide what kind of protection I need against myself, thankyouverymuch! So in 20 years you'll see me as the world's last remaining XP user...  ;D

If there is no internet connection available at install, the download fails and the MC12 install continues without the WM11 stuff.  You do get a message from MC advising you that you may not be capable of playing Windows Media content.

At which point you should say: "I have no intention of playing that DRM infected cr@p!" and just keep on installing and using a very nice piece of player software! :D
