Title: Making things 'offline' without losing library data

I have a lot of TV shows, and limited amounts of hard drive space.  And I keep a lot of information on each show in my library.  I'm looking for the best method of retaining the library information while moving the shows to a DVD for storage.  Does anybody have an suggestions on how to do this ?  I've tried burning them to DVD, then deleting the originals, but they don't read as offline, just missing.
