John,
About a month ago, you helped me offline with an MC prob. I have the Netgear EVA700 and play WMA VBR's. I sent you a bunch of winshark sniffs.
Anyway, being a dork, I upgraded MC12 to the 185 version. I can no longer play music files. I can see the files & playlists. I get an "Invalid" when I try to select them. I assumed whatever tweaks you made would remain fixed in newer versions and I shouldn't have upgraded. Can you help me out?
Also a general Q: If I set the random attribute in a smarlist, is this attribute acquired through the UPNP server? I mean, if I'm playing a smartlist from the EVA, it will still randomize the list each time it's selected from the appliance - as well as if I run it from the local player on the PC?
Thanks,
Mark

P.S. If I start the server and then the Netgear, the appliance doesn't see MC until I manually reboot/reset the netgear. I mention this because I noticed that in the time it took me to write that last post, MC no longer shows up on my TV. It somehow got lost by the Netgear...

It should still work - we'll figure it out.
Check your settings - make sure that conversion is set if needed, and converts to MP3.
See
http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/UPnP_Server#UPnP_and_Random_Smartlists
for info on how our UPnP server handles random smartlists.

It's not only smarlists. I can't select/play an individual song either.
I'm still set to encode if necessary/MP3.

Try to play an MP3 track (make one if you don't have one). Does that work?
Make sure the MP3 track plays in Media Center.
Choose a track, make sure it plays in Media Center, and then see if it plays on the device.
Let us know the results...

MP3 plays on the player and the appliance.
It's weird. I normally activate the server and then power up the Netgear. The netgear won't find MC until I manually reset it, through the menu's. WMP and Tversity come up fine from the start.
I knew better than to upgrade, and I did it anyway.

So MP3 tracks play fine on the netgear from MC's UPnP server? But other tracks don't?
j

Correct.

Make a copy of one of the other tracks, and try converting it to MP3 (make the copy so you don't lose the original).
Does that work? Does the resulting MP3 play fine in Media Center? On the Netgear? I'm wondering if your MP3 encoder is not working...

J,
Not 100% on what you're saying. You want me to rip a song from a CD to MP3 format using MC12 as the rip app? (I think I used WMP11 to rip all my existing music.)
MC12 player will play all my music fine from the PC. All my WMA's & playlists display on the netgear; I just can't select any any of them or even highlight them for selection/playback. WMA (VBR) format is supported by netgear. TVersity & WMP11 will play my music over the netgear. - this is just FYI info to make sure we're on the same page.
I'll use MC12 to rip an MP3 from a CDA (raw audio CD) and do the tests you requested...

Are you converting the WMA to MP3? Or are you trying to play it without conversion?

I assume I'm trying to play it without conversion. I have MC media server set to convert if necessary.
Anyway, I just ripped a song to MP3 format. Started the server & truned on the netgear. Netgear found MC12 right off the bat - which it hadn't been. Played the MP3 fine. Played the rest of my library fine (tested 5 WMA's). It even played my smartlists.
I'm perplexed.
I apologize if the noise in my head is bothering you...
