Title: library server from Vista
Post by: quirtep on March 25, 2007, 01:15:46 pm
I have the library server running on a machine that is running Vista.  On a machine that is running XP, I attempt to search for Library servers, but it does not find any.  I disabled firewall on both machines, and have done other general troubleshooting.  It worked for me before I updated to Vista.  What can I do differently?  Thanks.

Are you running the latest MC12, available at the top of this board?

Yes, I downloaded the latest version this morning and installed it on both server and client.

I don't know but try reading a few of the recent Vista threads.  Nero was causing a problem on some.

In the wiki, there is some info on testing a Library Server.

I don't have Nero, and Media Center is running perfectly fine in every way except that I cannot get the library server to work.  Any other suggestions?

Just a wild guess on my part, but in one of the Nero threads I mentioned above, bartman said this:

I know Vista's UAC will 'quietly' fail many system requests that do not conform with the new UAC rules (in an attempt to slow down/thwart malware authors), perhaps this is what is happening with the attempt to disable the Nero feature.

Another thing I noticed:  When it fails to find the server, it displays this message:

Media Center failed to load the library 'Search for Library Servers' and will attempt to load the previously selected library.

Shouldn't it say something like "could not find library server?"

By the way - the message displayed in the previous post is on the XP machine - the client...

I am having similar problems which I'm currently
going through with John Gately.  The ball's in my court
with packet sniffing, but i've been too busy to
send another sniff.

Presumably JRiver has a Vista test machine by now
however, and tested that it does work?

This morning I got mine to work by specifying the IP address on both server and client (instead of letting TCP/IP automatically assign IP), and then pointing the client to the specific IP.  I do have a router in my network, but that isn't the issue since library serving worked fine before Vista.

Would y'all try turning off UAC, see if that helps?

I have it turned off by default.  I should get some free time to try
another sniff tonight.  Also I'll try static IP's instead of DHCP as suggested
by quirtep.
