I remember a thread in which King Sparta gave a few links to mp3 test utilites. I'm searhcing like crazy but I can't find it.
I have mp3utitity from that thread but searching that doesn't even return it.
In short, what I am looking for is a utility that scans mp3's and picks up encoding errors or corruption.
Mp3 utility only picks up sync errors in a few files. I know what that means, but how serious are those? I don't think I ever noticed it .... some of those songs I play quite often.
-
Even if you advance to just a few secs before where mp3utility says it has an error ?
I've found it quite reliable. You could try with FB2K (another player), usually when there is an error a err msg window that comes up and says its trying to resync, its audible more times than not. Tho FB2K isn't really necessary since MC is sample exact as well, i just have it handly in case i need to do a comparison.
Sync errors are the main problems to look for, can cause skips on hardware players or in worse cases stumps them completely.
-
Oke, I checked and only with a few I hear something audible.
Half of them are from one artist and are all at 0%, immediately at the beginning of the song.
Is there any other way to test them? I can find some tools on the web but I'd rather use something others have used with good success.
-
0% sounds like header corruption, are these vbr files ?
probably why you can't hear any probs.
-
Yes, they all are vbr.
How do you test them? Any suggestion for a good tool?
How do I fix it (other than reripping the albums)?
-
See this (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=20062.0) thread.
VBR Fix (http://www.willwap.co.uk/Programs/vbrfix.php)
I've never used this prog so test with a few, and let us know.
-
Thanks.
I just tested it and it doesn't fix this sync issue.
Hm, I'll keep em aside for a while. Maybe I'll rerip some of them.
-
Try removing (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=32322.0) the tags and re-adding them.
-
if you hear something like fast forward for a split second, that is most likely a Sync Error
If That Is The Case Then the File Is Trash, There Is No Fixing It Without removing some Frames.
You can use Mp3Studio And MP3Utility172.zip Avail From My Ftp Server
ftp.spartasoft.com
User ID: mediacenter
Password: mediacenter
you can maybe load the media file into media editor and zoom in, highlight the offending spike, and "Delete" it
or like i said delete the file.
There is no miracle cure for a sync error
-
Thanks Sparta.
I'll have a look at mp3studio and media editor and see what that brings.
Might be easier to rerip them though.
-
Hm. Appearently these tests do not detect corruption inside audio files.
I just ran into a corrupted file (just LOUD noise) and thank God it was playing on my el cheapo pc speakers. This is THE reason I wanted to test because a buddy of mine blew up his tweeters in his high end speaker system due to a corrupt mp3.
Is there a way to test for these kind of corruptions?

;D How funny things can go; it scared the heck out of me because I was just done fixing a small water leak in the kitchen and engaged the main water when exactly at that precise moment this LOUD noise played from the speakers and stopped at the exact same time when I closed the water again. Believe me you don't want 2,5 bars water pressure spoiling in your kitchen out of a 15mm pipe :o . I ran to the kitchen with towels and stuff only to look around puzzled ? when the noise appeared again from the speakers ::) Now you understand why I want to test those mp3's ;D

Mp3utility will look for file integrity errors, it wont detect loud sounds even if the mp3 is in fact ok.
For that it looks like you might have to run audio analysis on your files, MC will then add a correction in the opposite directoin if it thinks the file is too loud.
-
Yeah I have run an analysis on all files in my library. 64 had time sync errrors and I keep them apart. THis file was not detected, it just has half a second of a hissing noise. From mid to high all EQ bars peak. Replay gain is at -18.01dB, peak level 100% and album gain at 14.49dB. Volume leveling is set to album based.
-
Wow I just opened the songs one by one in media editor and the end of every song is corrupt, just noise.
This is an album I own and ripped with EAC/Flac. Later it was converted to lame mp3.
I guess I'll be googling for a tool that possibly detects this kind of corruption. I need to know if I have more of these corrupted files in my library.
-
Time sync errors appear to be vbr header problems, VBR fix might be able to help out with that.
-
Yeah you mentioned that before. Unfortunately that doesn't fix it but its not a big issue I can rerip those songs.
I'm not really after fixing it anymore but detecting it. Mp3utility works great for header and sync issues, now detecting suspicous files with noise would be great. I've posted on hydrogenaudio as well and I'm searching like crazy to find something that can do this for me.

MP3Checker v1.08
MP3Test v1.5.1.152
MP3Trim Pro
mp3val v0.1.6
Those are my current tools for such problems (May not be latest versions though).
I'd think MP3Trim would be the most helpful for your problems, but the others are free, so try them first.

Good stuff, thanks I'll check it out and let you guys know.
