Different View Schemes are unaccessible when "in" a particular scheme with a tab. The pragmatic experience of tabs is negated when re-opening MC as all the tabs default to Audio.
I have four main View Schemes, with sub-schemes which I can access from each tab; every time I restart MC I have to open the tree and setup all the tabs.
I know the tree isn't going anywhere, but I'm hoping this can be reconciled, and maybe some of the other feature request for auto-hiding the tree etc. will show up in MC13.

Options->startup->location->last location
now try to re-open MC.

I just realized that Tabs only allow you to modify/navigate in that View Scheme.
This is troublesome when you have main view schemes and sub-schemes, but also just in general for any setup.
Why not, above Pane, have the navigation line that allows you to switch between view schemes? Or even relegate some of the Scheme modifications (sort, layout) to the header where you can already access them?
Tabs seem rather worthless without the ability to move around to different schemes, especially if use sub-schemes.
Music
-Studio Quality
-Studio Quality (Single Artist)
-Live Music
-Female Vocals
-Mixes & Compilation
-Sountracks
Jamaican Music
etc.
etc.
Sub-schemes are a good way to organize without adding esoteric genres imo. Even if all of these were unique View Schemes, MC won't let you move between them without the tree.
MC has this great feature which is counterintuitive and under-developed.

Use the tree.
-
The tree is archaic; it is essential, but clunky. I can barely see the tabs to open it from my couch. No hotkeys to open and close, no auto-hide.
My suggestion is above, you guys have read my opinion; it will make MC exceptionally friendly for those of us trying to be tree-free. Take it or leave it, I'm done preaching.

I like it ....

i actualy think the tree works fine. for when the screen is to far away to read, use Theater View or bigger characters. still i think something like a shortcut 'tree' as in outlook would be a nice extra.
-
Of course the tree works fine, that's the problem. Bigger characters, yes, but to a point. Theater View is just too far removed from being able to actually "use" MC....it seems like it's for people who don't know how to use a computer or an app like MC. I not advocating banishing the tree, rather, I am saying that Tabs, as conceived, are pretty much worthless, and frankly, I am tired of having to find the microscopic caret mark to open & close the tree.

Leave them off (the default).
I am tired of having to find the microscopic caret mark to open & close the tree.
Leave the tree open. Or double-click the splitter.
Of course the tree works fine, that's the problem.
I also take exception with things that work fine. It's why I'm such a fan of old trucks that have been on fire, cheap plastic hose reels, and printers that clog every five minutes.
Seriously though, I don't understand this thread. Tabs can be remembered, which addresses the original post. They can also be disabled, which addresses the last complaint.

I like it ....
Me too.
-
Somebody mention worthless Tabs? Count me in as a tree-hugger.
-
Geez guys...the tabs are a great idea but ill-conceived as such. All I'm saying is that if you added a drop down menu in Tabs so we could switch between View Schemes, I'd swoon.
The tree, as I have cleary stated, should not be done away with, but my experience finds it cumbersome to open and close, affecting workflow and MC enjoyment adversly. I had to get up and show my father with my finger where the splitter bar was...it's a pain, plain & simple (Hotkey, auto-hide ; )
Old trucks are fun until your changing an alternator belt in the dead of winter with your bare hands. Somebody lock this thread before my head explodes : )

How about a different way, create smartlists for
-Studio Quality
-Studio Quality (Single Artist)
-Live Music
-Female Vocals
-Mixes & Compilation
-Sountracks
store those in a playlist group
in the first column of the viewscheme, call that group.
Now you have one view scheme, with all the other grps which you can click on.
-
But I will still not be able to shift between them with Tabs, and no nesting of sub-schemes means a giant list that could eventually run off the bottom of the screen or require scrolling. The drop down menu with all schemes (in my case parent schemes) listed for currently selected main Audio, Image, or Video scheme would be ideal. Then I have a tab for Audio, Images, Video, and maybe Drives & Devices or Tags Incomplete....."tree free" baby. ;D

The thought of life without trees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lacanja_burn.JPG) makes me sad.

Sounds a lot like the navigation/favorites.
So why use tabs for this then ?

Sounds a lot like the navigation/favorites.
Good point. Try adding "Navigation" to the toolbar. It sounds like just what you're asking for.

Works pretty good actually, thanks.
BUT, any chance of getting a rip button here:

thanks
