Title: M4V Files - Directshow Playback Options (SOLVED)
Post by: Magic_Randy on May 31, 2007, 12:48:29 am
Is there a reason M4V files are not listed under file types for the Directshow Filters?

When I use MC to play M4V files, it uses Quicktime and does not play very well. If I rename the files to MP4, I have a lot of flexibility using the CCCP Codec Pack I have installed. If I'm not mistaken, the MP4 files and M4V files must be the same, otherwise renaming them would not work.

M4V doesn't really "exist", according to the ISO/IEC specification.  It's a "fake" Apple-invented filename extension, just like M4A.  Both of them are really just MP4 files, which can contain audio, video, both, or neither.  Apple decided to call the audio-only MP4 files M4A and the video ones M4V (and the DRM infected ones M4P).  More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP4

Hi glynor,

Thanks for the explanation.  I guess it's not surprising that Apple has to make it more complicated than needed.  I will just rename the m4v files to mp4.
